This '49 Chrysler Royal station wagon is about as rare as '41 and '42 barrel backs. It’s reported that there are only twenty or so of these left in the world. The value of this car restored to show condition is well into six figures. It is extremely complete, missing only a few parts. The wood needs to be totally replaced, but the wood is complete enough for patterns. I do have a source for a complete wood kit for this wagon. It appears that it is onlymissing a few of the stainless trim pieces, but not much else. This is a nine passenger station wagon. All seats are present. The original six cylinder engine and drive train still intact. The sheet metal is rusty but easily restorable with typical rust through in the front foot wells and rockers. The higher level floors in the rear seat and back end are in great shape. This is an opportunity to restore one of the best woody station wagons starting with an original, numbers matching car that is mostly complete, and enough wood for patterns. I have purchased a couple of better trim pieces since these pictures were taken.
The car comes with a clear title. It also comes with a lot of the wood not shown in the pictures. The passenger door parts (two metal panels, hardware, and most wood parts are allpresent. As an example, I believe that the upper tailgate window could be pieced together from the spare wood pieces for patterns. I don't think any hardware is missing for all four doors, windows or tailgates (including the second seat sliders).Even the upper and lower tailgate hardware all seems to be present. Both rear fender skirts are present, as well as one of the rear bumper splash aprons as shown in the pictures. The rear bumper center fold down aluminum piece is missing. All plastic lenses and insignia are present on the taillights, tailgate and front. One of the two rear fender well arm rest pads is present as well.
The car requires a good deal of work, but it is an original car and with a new wood kit could become a quite rare and valuable investment. The green car at the end of my pictures is a recent offering of one of these wagons, done to a very high standard, and will a selling price in excess of $160,000. The last picture is of the company who makes the wood kit for this car.
