1964 Chrysler Newport Convertible Additional Info:
Condition: Car appears to have never been in an accident. Doors, trunk, hood and top all fit as they should. All windows go up & down as they should (not power). Glass is all OK. All trim appears to be there w/ exception of front fender script. Both bumpers are damaged (see photos). Pretty sure it is the Original paint, which is faded with various scratches or thin spots. Top might be the original--it is dry with a few splits in it and there is no back window. In other words: it needs to be replaced.
Interior appears to be original with an aftermarket radio. Dash is not bad: some buckling but no open splits (better than many other '64's I've seen). Gauges all seem to work OK (no clock, which was an option). Steering wheel has typical cracks to these year Chryslers, and would be OK with a nice wrap. Push Button shift works in each position. Uncertain about Heater/defrost--I've not used that to date, but the buttons seem to be OK. Power Top does work--I've had the top Up-and-down (see photos). Original upholstery is dry and split at stitching seams. Would need to be replaced. Original style upholstery is available on line. (Note: appears that Black and White was the only two-tone color option. Although there are two different patterns to the vinyl, the other color choices all one color). Door panels and rear seat panels are OK. Not perfect but not all torn up--ok for driver quality. Carpet is poor and would need replacement. Hardware is good - could be polished - I don't think anything is missing.
Engine compartment: Looks like everything is there, even the orig washer bag (although that is dry and may not function). Does not seem as though it is losing any fluids. I've added a gallon or two of gas a couple of times because I start the car onoccasion and move it around the yard to reposition it, but I've never filled the tank to full.
The trunk is not bad but does have some rust. Which brings to that issue: there is rust. a) There is a rust hole in the lower driver's front fender. b) There is rust in the rockers and a little in the rear wheel well arch. Not terrible, but it is there. c) There is rust-out in the rear seat foot-wells. d) There is rust in the lower quarter panels, which of course can be seen from within the trunk, but the trunk itself only has a couple of small holes--easily repairable. I've looked off-and-on since I bought the car for some of these parts: Bumpers, front fender, rear quarters. New panels are available online for the rear footwells (about $150 for both), and new rocker panels are available. As for bumpers or a replacement front fender I've not yet found any individual part and would consider buying a donor car if need be.
As I indicated, I've started and driven the car around the yard a few times. I took it out on the road one time to check the brakes. I drove about a 1/2 mile to the next intersection and back. I took it up to 35mph and the trans shifted OK. But the brakes do need work--would not drive it as is. The brakes do work but the pedal is very hard. Takesconsiderable force to slow the car. Around the yard, I just shift into neutral and at that speed the car brakes OK. I haven't run into anything! But takes too long to slow down to be safe on the road. Feels like there is no power brake plus the brake pads are hard. However, there is no squeal or grinding noises. Hoses, wheel cylinders, brake shoes are all readily available at local parts stores as would be a master cylinder. Not sure about the vacuum booster availability--but I suspect it would not be an issue. Tires that came on thecar are a "no-name" radial. They have good tread but I do not know how old they are. However, a tire went bad on my other '64 and I swapped out the wheels and tires from one to the other. I have thus driven over 800 miles on the tires that came, and will come, with this car and I did not have any problems.
Features: Not many options. Does have PS and PB. Top is power, of course. Had a radio, but is now an aftermarket. No clock, no PW, no A/C (another reason for a potential donor car!), no remote mirror or pass side mirror. Has back-up lights, which was an option.
History: Don't know too much about ownership. Car has been sitting since 1997 (last NY inspection). But it must have been sitting at least part of that time indoors or well covered. I've kept it covered and dry in my yard.
What has been done: Previous to my purchase, last November, a new battery and a correct new carburetor were installed. I replaced the air filter. Not sure when tune-up parts were last replaced, but like I said, I start and move the car around the yard, and it drove OK the one time I took it out on the road. Oil is clean. Anti-freeze looks OK. Previous owner located a very nice and correct set of Newport wheel covers. I've not had the car up on a lift.
