Notes From The Previous Owner (anyone interested in the car should verify this information, I have no knowledge or proof of this information)
No Greg ... I don't have any stuff on motor ...Tommy Costales in Pearland did complete engine ...It is a new LS7 7.4 liter chevy big block (at least it was new at that time) ... none of the engine is factory.
Tommy built it from race parts. It has LS7 heads (Square Port) that flow a ton of air and fuel, it has 4 bolt mains and a steel crank. Motor has been balanced and blueprinted. After he built it, Tommy took the engine over to a race shop where motor was put on dyno .Dyno demonstrated that put out lots of power ... if my recollection is right it was upward of 600 hp.
Holley carb has 3.5 inch vacuum power valves (instead of factory 6.5 inch vacuum power valves.
This means when you idle with a big cam (as the 71 has) and the manifold vacuum is low, the carb doesn't allow extra fuel to bypass the jets into motor.
This happens because race car manifold vacuum is never high enough to close the factory 6.5 inch power valve. Most Race cars are in the range of 4 inches vacuum at idle.
A power valve is there so when you give it the gas under power you get more gas to engine ... power valve essentially bypasses the jets to provide more fuel during acceleration. This is necessary, because when you throw open the throttle, the manifold vacuum drops ... and more gas makes you go fast.
However, you do not want power valve to be open when you are at idle. That is what makes a big cam engine so hard to idle ... too much gas during idle ... because factory 6.5 inch power valves never close on race cars at idle.
Car looks good ... but you took off the side pipes ... part of the car I really liked. It also won't be near as fast because a ton of power is lost in factory exhaust.
Also looked you replaced the factory shifter ... just the linkage or the entire 4 speed. He put heavy duty rods, wrist pins, etc.
He even did some porting of the heads to make them flow better.Tommy did just about everything that was considered at that time to be the best for high hp and reliability ...
The lifters are hydraulic (not manual) which mean you don not have to reset them with a feeler gauge.Tommy assured me the lifters would produce the max hp on this motor ... and so says the dyno results.
