This is a great old barn find I found about 2 weeks ago. A 79 year old man had owned this tow truck for about 35 years. He said that he used it to tow his race car back and forth to the track. He rebuilt one of his race motors, a 327 cu in Chevy with headers and installed it into this tow truck years ago. He said that the motor has less than 200 miles on it since rebuild. It has a 4 speed transmission with Granny gear. I pulled it out of the barn, put a new battery in, added some gas down the carb and it fired right up and kept running fine. I had it towed to my house because the brake pedal was all the way on the floor. I changed the oil and filter, new air cleaner, new plugs and wires and bled the brakes. I checked all of the lights and they work fine, including the gumball machine top rotating light. I operated the hook and sling with the two levers in the back of the bed and they also work fine. I greased all of the fittings and then off to town I went. This truck is a head turner. Everywhere I went I had admirers and questions. The body is very straight with very little rust anywhere. The doors open and close fine. The windows roll up and down. The passenger window and windshield are cracked, nothing serious, but cracked. The drivers window and back window are fine, no cracks. The tires look old and cracked, some worn out, but they hold air. The lettering is vinyl and can be removed. This old truck is a beauty, ready to drive around as it is or restore to show quality.
