1987 Camaro Convertible by ASC
This was an internal development car built at ASC in Southern California. The same ASC McLaren who built the GNX Grand National and Fox body Mustangs in the late 80’s.
This original 5.0 Camaro Sport Coupe was supplied to ASC by Chevrolet as part of a group of cars to test the convertible / 350ci combination. It became the pet project of one of the executives who commissioned all of the custom work.
ASC modified this car into a Convertible and installed a balanced/Blueprinted Trayco built 5.7L that had been purchased for another development car by ASC. The other car suffered extensive frame damage from the increased HP and convertible modification. As a result, extensive stiffening bars were added under the hood and underneath, these did not make it to production and this was the only F Body I’ve seen have them.
The executive commissioning the work had a high quality Wet sanded and buffed Jet-Black paint job done. As you can see in the photos it still looks amazing. He also had quick shift modifications to the transmission which at the time cost $6,500 in the late 80’s. A custom Recaro driver seat in matching Camaro fabric was added along with Borla exhaust from the headers back. The Top and back window are both in great condition. The convertible is a manual not powered top. Not for sale in California, due to modifications it will no longer pass Smog tests.
Since owning the car, I’ve done paint correction and had the rear side spoilers repainted. I replaced the throttle body, MAF sensors and relays. The radiator and washer tanks where both changed. Also new tires were installed and have less than 300 miles on them.
The car is a blast to drive, always gets a crowd around it at gas stations because of the paint job and turns heads everywhere I go. Hoping the next owner enjoys it as much as I have.
