1969 Chevelle SS 396. This is a True code 72 Monaco Orange, 4 speed, parchment interior, parchment vinyl top car. If it were 1969 and you wanted to be seen, this was the car you would do it in. WHEW. You were not going to be missed driving this one.

This car has a very interesting back story, I have tried to piece together some history. The car was sold new in Kinston, NC in august of 1969 to a soldier coming home from Viet Nam. (I have a copy of the original title and all titles issued for the car). The car never left NC. It stayed within a 100 mile radius of where it was sold new all its life. The soldier moved to Fort Bragg in Fayetteville NC where it was sold to another soldier on Base, possibly a friend in 1977. It changed hands again to another owner in 1980, in Fayetteville and then one last time to the last owner in Spring Hope, NC. By that time she has been rode hard and put up wet and I believe at last parted out.

Details and Documentation

When you decode the trim tag and look at what is left of the car you can somewhat piece together how the car was optioned. The trim tag tells you the car was built in Fremont California, on the 3rd week of July. It came with trim code 791, parchment vinyl wrapped bucket seats. Paint code is 72E, Monaco Orange paint and a code E parchment vinyl top. It has a B80 code for the brightwork package that would have come with the vinyl roof. Now, that’s what the trim tag tells us.

The rest we piece together from what is left. The first is the HP rating. It has the return fuel line so that tells us it came as a 325 or 350 hp car. It has the factory floors in it and that tells us it was indeed a manual shift car, honestly it could have been a 3 speed, but I assume it was a 4 speed. Also looking at the floor you can tell it was a factory console car, the brackets are still present. Looking at the remainder of the factory wiring harness, you can see the tach wire is present so we know it was a gauge car. It still has the deluxe seat belts bolted to the floor in the rear so we know it had deluxe belts. It was a power disc brake car, all SS car were equipped with disc brakes. The rest is left up to our imagination, but that is what we can decipher from what we have.

Condition and what’s included

For some it may be hard to see the diamond in the rough that I see here. For sitting outside all its life the car isn’t in bad shape. The Monaco Orange paint you see in the pictures in the door jambs etc is the original paint. The floors are original and with the exception of a few holes in the front driver floor board they are super nice. The rockers are good both in and outer. The quarters have no bubbling around the wheel lips but will need attention behind the rear wheels. The driver door looks nice on the inside but rusty underneath due to a animal nest being built on inside, door is still savable. Passenger door is nice. Trunk lid has seen better days. The trunk floor is toast as well. The frame has a place needing attention in the rear under the trunk floor. The rear differential under the car is just a roller, 10 bolt.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!! What comes with the car. I have a set of NOS fenders in the boxes that go with the car. I also have a nice original paint SS hood. I have the back seat upper and lower. I have some window trim, headlight bezels, SS trim plate off the dash, a pillar trim, the rusty original radiator support and a clean and clear title in my name.
