1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 454 LS6 Additional Info:
After nearly 25 years of dealing in high-end classic cars, muscle cars & hot rods, it really takes something very special to make my jaw drop to the floor when a new vehicle comes rolling off of the transport truck. The vehicle that you are looking at right now is one such machine!
‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is extremely proud to offer you this absolutely stunning, all #’s matching and heavily documented 1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 454 LS6 pickup! This outstanding LS6 El Camino certainly has to be one of the finest examples of its kind on the planet, and has never been offered for sale until now. As the story is often told, the Regular Production Option (RPO) LS6 was a 454ci/450hp equipped Chevelle SS, only offered in the pinnacle year of 1970. Production numbers vary, but the two figures that appear most often are 4,475 or 4,439, each within spitting distance of each other. And that leads to the question of how many 1970 LS6 El Caminos were actually built? The LS6 Registry estimates the number of 1970 LS6 El Caminos at 585 units. The mighty 454/450hp LS6 power-plant had a one-year reign, and had completely disappeared by 1971. As most Bowtie muscle car fanatics well know, finding a true #’s matching LS6 El Camino w/ bullet-proof original documentation is beyond rare.
Ordered on January 23, 1970, @ Benson Chevrolet in Roswell, GA. by Mr. W.J. Carter, and delivered on March 12, 1970, this LS6 El Camino stayed w/ its original owner from 1970 thru 2016. As listed on the original buyer’s order and original dealership sales invoice, factory options include: 450hp Turbojet 454ci engine ($269), TH400 automatic transmission ($297), Positraction Axle ($43.05), SS454 Equipment ($514.35), Cowl-Induction Hood ($123.75), Vinyl Roof ($64.60), Power Steering ($107.60), Special Front & Rear Suspension ($17.25), Front Bumper Guards ($16.15), Heavy-Duty Battery ($16.15), Power Windows ($64.60), Tilt-Steering Column ($46.30), Special Instrumentation ($86.10), AM Radio ($62.45), Tinted Glass ($37.70), Remote Mirror ($10.80), Auxiliary Lighting ($23.15), Deluxe Seat Belts ($9.15), Visor Vanity Mirror ($3.25), Door Guards ($4.35), and Floor Mats ($6.50).
The second owner commissioned Lee Barnes @ Barnes Classic Restorations to perform what turned out to be a $141,000 concours-level, nut & bolt rotisserie restoration (fully documented), and I can safely say that this gorgeous machine looks much nicer than it did when it rolled off of the Chevrolet assembly line back in 1970. She now sits on our showroom floor here in St. George, Utah, is absolutely 'mint' condition throughout. Finished in its original shade of Shadow Gray (Code 17) w/ Black Stripes & Black Vinyl Top, the bodywork & paint are absolutely second to none. All of the body panels line up ‘perfectly’ w/ precise gaps throughout, and the Shadow Grey paint is simply ‘flawless’ w/ a brilliant shine. There are absolutely NO chips, NO scratches, NO blemishes, and NO distractions whatsoever. All of the chrome & stainless-steel trim is absolutely ‘flawless’ as well, w/ a mirror-like appearance. The bed area is as ‘perfect’ as the rest of the pickup, including the surrounding chrome trim, down to the ‘flawless’ tailgate release latch. This LS6 El Camino is a showstopper folks, from the correct T3 headlights up front, to the chrome Bowtie emblem on the tailgate, and everything in between! She also has a perfect stance, and sits on the original 14” SS wheels, wrapped w/ correct Goodyear Polyglas F70-14 tires. The undercarriage is just as ‘pristine’ as the top side, and is beautifully detailed w/ correct components from front to back (please look closely at the chassis photos to see how extensive the concours restoration was).
When you open the driver’s door, you will find an absolutely ‘perfect’ black vinyl bench seat interior that looks just like it did when it was delivered new back in 1970. All of the original gauges, lights, blinkers, power windows, AM radio, etc. are in perfect working order, as you would expect from a classic car of this caliber. There are none finer, period.
Now, let’s get to the heart of this beast, shall we?
Pop open the hood and nestled inside of the beautifully detailed engine bay resides the #’s matching 454ci/450hp LS6 motor, lathered in Chevy orange paint w/ chrome valve covers, original Winters intake manifold, original Holley carburetor, etc., and correct AC Delco parts sprinkled throughout. The ‘RR’ suffix code stamp (LS6 motor w/ TH400 transmission) and partial VIN stamp are both present and appear to be original stamps. The motor is linked to the #’s matching TH400 automatic transmission (original Muncie stamp and partial VIN stamp), which feeds power to the original #’s matching 3.31 Positraction rear axle. Not only is this gorgeous LS6 El Camino easy on the eyes w/ it’s ‘perfect’ appearance, but it runs just as good as it looks! She fires up instantly w/ a flick of the wrist, and she drives & performs beautifully in every single way. Less than 50 miles have been driven since the completion of the nut & bolt restoration, so the new owner is basically getting a brand new LS6 El Camino. As we all know, original documentation is everything when it comes to LS6 cars, and this one certainly has that covered. Original paperwork includes: factory original Protecto-Plate, original Benson Chevrolet Buyer’s Order, original Benson Chevrolet Sales Invoice, copy of the original 1970 Georgia Certificate of Title, and stacks of detailed & itemized restoration receipts totaling $141,000. She is certain to win ‘Concours-Gold’ awards at events such as the ‘Carlisle Chevrolet Nationals’ or the ‘MCACN Nationals’, but she can also be driven and enjoyed to the fullest for those who demand to drive their classic vehicles.
Simply stated: This 1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS 454 LS6 pickup is for the high-end collector who simply wants the best that money can buy. I believe that it would be next to impossible to find another example that truly compares.
