There are two type of old station wagons. The first is a pure people mover, sometimes adorned with fake wood on the sides and offering seating for nine passengers. Think Ford Country Squire or Buick Estate. The second is something a lot cooler like this 1966 Chevy II (the basis for the Nova). With its sharp two-tone paint, 17” aluminum wheels, and V8 power this is the wagon you wish your parents had.
As shown in the gallery, this car was stripped down and given a repaint in Mist Blue with a white top. I think it’s a great color combination on this body style. Some rust repairs were made at that time as well. The car also received new bumpers and trim pieces. It rides on 17” aluminum wheels that really add to the appearance. Note the rear window mechanism was changed from manual to power for easier operation.
The original straight-6 engine has been replaced by a 283ci V8. This is a stock GF-suffix 195hp setup mated to a Powerglide automatic transmission. Brakes are 4-wheel drums while the steering offers power assist. Recent mechanical work includes new control arms, ball joints, brake hoses, trans cooler lines, idler arm bushings, tie rod ends / adjusters, stabilizer bar bushings / links, and a front-end alignment.
The sharp two-tone interior was also redone and matches the paint nicely. The seats, door panels, carpet, seat belts, and headliner were all replaced. The dash was redone and received a new digital AM/FM radio. The lights, gauges, turn signals, wipers, horn, and heater all work properly. And as a station wagon, the folding rear bench seat allows for a huge amount of storage space if needed.
Most station wagons will not do much for the average gearhead. But this one will get their attention. With its classic lines and sporty looks, it offers something a little different than the average Nova while still providing a nice degree of utility. All at a price that well below that of its 2-door cousins.
