1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z/28, Original Engine, Factory Documented, MCACN Concours Gold Winner

It is one thing to know that the Z28 Camaro was one of the most successful factory-built race cars of the 1960's, it is quite another to have one that is Factory Original, Concours Award Winning, and lived out that racing glory. It is not unlike the difference between having a Dealer Pace Car Replica and having one of the few festival cars that paced the opening of the Indy 500. This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z/28 was built look that part, but also played the role, then continued to dominate in the Concours show arena later in life. This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z/28 sports its 100% original engine and rear end, documented, certified by Jerry MacNeish in September of 2017, and includes a Camaro Hi-Performance, Inc COA. Even having lived part of its life as a Stock Eliminator drag racer, still sports all its original sheet metal body panels without ever having been sectioned or patched. And currently sits in near number one condition, turn-key road ready, running the original engine, balanced and blue printed by the current owner, a nationally renowned Muscle Car restorer and aficionado.

According to the GM of Canada Historical documents, this this 1969 Camaro was equipped for both show and go. RPO Z22, the Rally Sport (RS) option, included a special black-painted grille with concealed headlights and headlight washers, fender striping (except when sport striping or Z28 Special Performance Package is specified), simulated rear fender louvers, front and rear wheel opening moldings, black body sill, RS emblems on grille, steering wheel and rear panel, Rally Sport front fender nameplates, bright accented taillights, back-up lights below rear bumper; also included bright roof drip moldings on Sport Coupe. The RS option could be added to any other option. This '69 Camaro was also optioned with the Z/28 Special Performance Package, making it an RS/Z28, one of the most desirable option combinations in the collector car arena. And it's no wonder. The Z/28 package got you the 11:1 high compression ratio 302CI engine including forged pistons, forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, solid lifter camshaft, and Holley carburetion on a dual-plane intake manifold. This high revving, rowdy motor is backed by a Muncie four-speed with a new-for-69 standard Hurst shifter and connected to a 12-bolt rear axle with standard 3.73 gears.

How many other race-proven high performance Muscle Cars persist today, still in possession of their original engine, retain virtually all their original sheet-metal, are fully documented with owner history back to new, and currently sit OEM Concours Condition? Not many. In short, this 1969 Camaro RS Z/28 only knows one thing, how to WIN.

According to GM of Canada records, this Cortez Silver Camaro RS/Z28 was shipped to Belmont Chevrolet Oldsmobile in Toronto, Ontario on March 3, 1969. Shortly thereafter it was bought by the owner of Nu Grape Pop Company for his wife. The following Spring, she traded it back in, showing 10,500 miles on the odometer, to Belmont Chevrolet because it was too fast. Too much car for this driver.

That same Spring of 1970 the second owner. He visited Belmont Chevy to find this '69, a fresh trade-in, lurking in their indoor basement showroom. It was like new, not a scratch on her. He then commuted to and from work for the next two years, Spring, Summer, and Fall only. The RS Z/28 was taken off the road in the Fall of 1972, never to be street driven daily again.

Just as this Camaro's short life as seasonal driver ended, its second life as a drag racer was about to begin. By 1974, this '69 Camaro RS Z/28 was running in the NHRA Stock F/S class under the B&T Custom Auto banner. At the end of the '75 season the car was retired and stayed tucked away until 1983 when it changed hands for the third time.

The third owners attempted to restore the car. The effort stalled. Losing storage of the uncompleted car, the car sold again in 1994.

The fourth owner purchased this '69 RS Z/28 in 1994, restored the car for Concours show judging. During the process of preparing for a new kind of competition, it became apparent that this Camaro retained all its original body panels, with not so much as a single dent on the entire car.

The endgame was not to just return the car showroom new, but also correct for the production date of the vehicle. A cache of NOS and OEM parts were poured into this RS Z/28. The original “born with” VIN Numbers Matching engine, previously built for F/S drag racing competition, was returned to OEM factory stock specifications including restoring the correct “V0206DZ” engine assembly date and suffix code on top pad. According to the MacNeish Certificate of Authenticity, the VIN Stamp on the oil filter boss confirms originality. Every nut and bolt were turned. Every finish fretted over. Even the tire treads were wrapped for transport to the judging venue. The restoration was completed just in time for the 2013 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN). The moment of truth arrived on November 24th of 2013, scoring deep Concours Gold at 989 out of 1000 points.

Riding the momentum of its MCACN win, the Camaro found its fifth owner in January of 2014. The car pulled Garage Queen duty for a few years and then he decided to sell it to make room for another Corvette. Jerry MacNeish conducted his inspection and appraisal on September 26, 2017, in preparation for sale. The current owner, Ken Maisano of Mascar Classics fame, purchased the RS Z/28 in October of 2017.

Ken is well known within the hobby for building the best of the best in American Muscle Cars. While he was impressed with the overall fit, finish, and execution of the MCACN Concours Gold Award winning restoration, there was room to take this 1969 Camaro RS Z/28 from good to great. Looking to take the car from Garage Queen to Concours Driven Street King, Ken began by tearing the original “born with” engine down to the bare block and giving it the royal treatment of a full balance and blueprint. Ken didn't stop there either. He took stock of the 11 points missed in 2013 as well as the notes made by Jerry MacNeish in his 2017 survey of the car and brought it to yet another level.

From 2017 to present, this '69 RS Z/28 has enjoyed 1,500 miles of turn-key road ready, Concours driven perfection. The car has been authenticated by General Motors of Canada Vintage Division. Further documentation includes written affidavits from previous owners, historical drag racing photographs, historical ownership titles, the original Protect-O-Plate, original photos of Belmont Chevrolet Oldsmobile dealership, original Bill of Sale, original GM Owner's Manual, as well as hundreds of photos chronicling the restoration efforts.
