1975 Chevrolet Other Cosworth Additional Info:
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to offer this all original, 1975 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega for consideration. In a joint effort with the racing division of Cosworth Engineering of England, Chevrolet introduced the "Cosworth Vega" to the American public in 1975 with 2016 units produced. All were finished in Black acrylic lacquer paint with gold graphics and trim, all were powered by the Z09 dual overhead cam 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder EFI (electronic fuel injection) engine, all had the signature bulge in the hood, wheel openings and rear cove. Custom perforated vinyl seats were standard and all Cosworth's had engine-turned das bezels, gold dash plaque with the build sequence number, 8000 RPM Tach, and Cosworth Twin-Cam Vega steering wheel emblem.
The example offered here, #1631, is extremely original in all areas. The exterior lacquer paint remains mostly if not all original. Like all old lacquer paints, there is no shortage of patina. The paint is check all over, a little pealing in some areas and also sports its original decals and graphics. For cars that were prone to corrosion, the example here remains remarkably corrosion free. The driver floor at the heal strike area shows some expected surface rust but no holes and no through and through. The bottom of the doors, inside the rear compartment area and other nooks and corners are very clean with nothing to hide.
The interior remains original as well. The driver seat has a split in the bolster and the driver carpet is worn with the vinyl foot plate pretty much gone. It does show the floor section mentioned above. The rest of the original interior is excellent. The dash, door panels, trim panels are free from cracks, the remainder of the original carpet is intact.
Under the hood reveals the legendary Cosworth DOHC, 16 valve 4 cylinder. It is tidy and complete including the original electronic fuel injection. The car is said to have been owned by a mechanic by trade, so no service receipts available, but there is extensive information including Cosworth Shop Manual, extensive Cosworth News Letters, Articles, original owners manual, and much more.
Mechanically, the car is a very spirited driver with a responsive clutch, smooth shifting, good suspension feel and positive braking.
Cosworth Vega's are rare, unique, and a blast to drive. Car and Driver magazine is quoted in saying after testing the prototype: "Cosworth Vega 16 valve: More than an engine. A taut-muscled GT coupe to devastate the smugness of BMW Tii's and 5-speed Alfa GTV's.....all of them will be collector's items." How true this statement was, today they are sought after and have international appeal. With documented sales exceeding $40,000 dollars, the example here is a value as a current driver and an excellent candidate to take to another level. Makes sense at the price offered here.
