1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS 327 V8 Convertible Additional Info:
West Coast Classics are proud to present a beautiful and very well preserved old restoration example of this original southern California black plate 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS Convertible with a small block 327 V8 engine with a date correct casting # 3914678 engine, Turbo 350 automatic transmission and still retaining its original cowl tag (trim tag) showing original color/equipment combination of British Green Metallic (Code Z) color paint and Black convertible top (Code 2), original 'Standard Black bucket seats' interior (Trim Code 712) and with power drum brakes, power top & Rally wheels with new tires!
There is no evidence of any rust or major accidents. As typically happens over the years, the block was most likely previously decked by a machine shop during a rebuild and the engine assembly date and suffix codes were removed by the machining process and therefore we are unable to confirm with any certainty if this engine is original to the car or not, although as stated, it is indeed a correct 327/V8 casting number for this period and year.
The car has all its original solid and rust free floor boards and and the condition of the interior, trim and glass is all exceptional. This engine is extremely strong and responsive with excellent oil pressure and no noticeable oil leaks and which sounds absolutely magnificent, the transmission shifts smoothly through the gears and the engine temperature always remains cool.
The massive success that was Fords Mustang did not go unnoticed by the folks over at Chevrolet. Looking to capture a share of the burgeoning pony car market, Chevrolets answer to the Mustang was the Camaro. Making its debut in September of 1966 the Camaro, like the Mustang, was available in a wide array of options and body styles. Introduced two years after the Mustang, Chevrolet realized that to pose a serious threat, merely introducing the Camaro would not be enough - a car capable of beating the Mustang at the racetrack was needed if the Camaro was to stand a chance against the widely popular Mustang and thus the Z28 was born.
The Rally Sport package included a special grille with the headlights hidden behind triple segmented doors that flanked the grille. Chevrolet even included a fail safe system to open the headlight doors if the vacuum motor failed and a chrome door that was slotted to allow light to shine through if the system failed completely. Headlight washers were also included. Other RS content included fender striping, except when the Z/28 option was added, bright accents on the air vents ahead of the rear wheel opening, front and rear wheel chrome moldings, black body sills, Rally Sport fender nameplates, bright tail light accents, bright parking light accents, back up lights below the rear bumper, RS steering wheel, bright roof drip moldings, bright accents on the instrument panels and doors, Astro Ventilation, color keyed deep twist carpet, ashtray with cigar lighter, center dome light, windshield molding, rectangular left hand outside rear-view mirror, front and rear side marker lights, rear bumper guards and a concealed fuel filler,
