1971 Chevrolet Chevelle Coupe
In lieu of the fact of being in production for just 13 years less time than the Cadillac CTS nameplate the Chevrolet Chevelle has been heralded as one of the best, most accomplished vehicles ever to don the bowtie. It shared a platform with the El Camino and Monte Carlo: though it was available in convertible, two-door, four-door, and station wagon-wagon body styles, the multi-variant Chevelle also share it's A-body platform with the El Camino, and the 1970-'72 Monte Carlo (though it was coded as a G-body in the latter). Despite wearing one of the most famous nameplates of all time, Chevrolet has yet to revive the name. Though we've heard rumblings and rumors over the years, Chevrolet has vehemently denied claims that a new Chevelle is in the works.
For consignment a 30 year project between two friends the has resulted in a beautiful final build, all American steel, no rust, a performer under the hood, totally stock looking interior with a few add ons, and ready to race or show, or go get groceries and turn heads.
Exterior
Steeped in red which is now covering virtually all replaced with OEM steel parts there is no rust in sight. New OEM bumpers (no re-plating here folks!). The finish is pristine, and all chromed trimmings are excellent. Badging is correct, and from top (which is black vinyl) to bottom (which is a stainless rocker), front (which is the original bowtie egg crate grille) to back (housing the taillights in the bumper) this car is definitely tightly buttoned up. Put a set of 15-inch Outlaw wheels on all 4 corners thrown on for extra style and bling... It's show time!
Interior
A typical but really nice Malibu door panel greets us as we slip into the nicely preserved buckets. These flank the center hump with a fire extinguisher and B&M shifter. Up front, below the padded dash top, is a simple dash with several add ons which include an AM/FM/Cassette player with additional equalizer, NOS controller, dual aftermarket gauges hanging below, and large tachometer attached to the steering column. The original steering wheel fronts this dash. In back is a nice bench, black carpet with embroidered bowtie mats floods the floors, and a tight black headliner is above. The car is equipped with A/C, which is inoperable, power steering and brakes (front disc).
Drivetrain
A stunner if you will upon opening the hood, it is showroom shiny, and sports a 355ci Chevrolet V8 in 4 bolt, 010 block, a steel GM crank, windage tray, a double roller timing chain, a Cam Dynamics mechanical roller cam, GM "pink rods" TRW 11:1 pistons, plus GM double hump heads w 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust valves...Whew! Topping this mill off is a Holley Mechanical Double Pumper 750cfm complete and a nitrous purge valve. In back is a TH350 transmission with a 10-inch stall converter, and a 4:11 posi 10 bolt axle. Inside are Richmond gears, all within the GM carrier.
Undercarriage
Much like the topside very nicely done with no rust and structurally solid as a rock. Seen are front power disc brakes and rear power drums, independent coil springs for the front and 4 link with coil springs for the rear. A nice clean exhaust system with a Turbo muffler runs rearward to chrome exhaust tips.
Drive-Ability
This car lit right up and ran beautifully on the test track. Noted is a spare hood for a supercharged engine, and an A/C compressor offered with this car but currently not on it.
A great presentation, fine runner and all very nicely finished off, particularly in the engine bay, but really all over. A nice job by 2 friends handing this car off, even though it took 30 years, it was worth it!
