This started as a simple clean up, pressure wash, tuneand drive shop truck. That lasted about an hour and I had to regroup as itneeded so much work….but I wanted a big back window cab, so here we go. Thenthe plan was to create a great driver with semi modern comforts but looked old.
RULE ONE: it was NEVER planned to be an arrow straight perfectly aligned shinybody pickup; but weather tight and not needing to be taken all apart again if Idecided to go that route….which I am not.
Why am I selling? We are moving and while I’m fine takingit with me, I already have plans to build something else and don't really want the hassle of moving it cross country.
Lets start at the front and go back from there:
Front suspension:
1986 Silverado crossmember and components, stock springs
All new poly bushings
All new Moog ball joints, tie rod ends, and center link
2.5” CPP drop spindles
NOS brake rotors (nice score!)
New gas shocks in stock location (dropped spindles do notchange the suspension geometry)
Captain Fab power steering frame adapter (good stuff!)with 1986 Silverado sector, new lines to 2012 pump
New brakes, lines, etc
Engine/trans:
2012 GMC Sierra 5.3 and 4l60E auto, never apart except tolift a rocker cover to look at cleanliness, all stock
Approx: 85k miles, new iridium plugs, stainless shortyheaders
Holley Terminator X engine/trans management system
Drive by wire throttle
New one piece driveshaft with greaseable zerks
BeCool aluminum radiator, electric van controlled by the Terminator X system
Cab:
New cab corners, rockers, patched new metal into thefloor pan, epoxy primer and undercoat underneath, sprayed all cavities withEastwood internal frame coating. All paint is hardened PPG single stage or PPG DBC 3000 clear.
Tilt column with shifter on column, original wheel (whichI wanted to retain, that may not work however, can’t make the horn work…..)
New cab mounts
New front bumper
New metal on bottoms and sheet metal of doors (PO cut out6x9 holes with a torch, interior guy made panels to cover those holes
Fenders we just cleaned up, colored and cleared, they arereally good except for the heels (as all those pickups suffered from) and left.
Vintage air and heat
Dakota Digital VHX gauges with DD Holley BIMs unit and DDneutral safety switch
Alpine double DIN head unit with Alpine component frontand Alpine component rear speakers. Back up camera
American Auto Wire 500560 chassis wiring kit (can't saygood enough things about this kit!!
Battery relocated to frame below bed
courtesy lights and glove box light
new shoulder/lap belts (passenger and driver, not center)
New windshield
New Steele rubber window gaskets and side window channelsand beltline felt. I did not rebuild the wing window rubbers
Original seat with new foam and really soft leather, newcarpet with insulation with leather accents.
Bed: repaired the missing sheet metal (rust in the normal spots) to provide strength and proper alignment, replaced the wood with just bolt down 1x8 yellow pine coated with sealant (did not want to do the full metal strip and wood replacement). All the cross supports are there. All metal was stripped and epoxy primed then sprayed semi gloss black. Original rear bumper.
New between frame rails 21 gallon tank, Holley pump andfilters with frame mounted regulator. All fuel lines and fitting are Earls EFI,
Rear suspension:
Original rear end with new spider gears, seals, 5 on 5” axles, disc brake conversion, 4:10 ratio.
Rear sway bar from a ’99 tahoe
2” drop blocks with 6.5 degree wedges
Factory rear overload springs
New KYB gas shocks out board of frame from a 2005 CrownVic
Brakes:
All new brake lines, master cylinder, booster, flexlines, etc. I did not do an emergency brake. Factory front NOS rotors, CPP booster and master cylinder with proportioning valve
Wheels: new 18x8 American racing with Michelin tires
Left to do before I sell:
find someone to make the custom AC lines (with the LS swap, Vintage Air sends the AC lines open on one end) and charge the system,
have the exhaust finished (2.5” stainless out the passengerside rear)
it is still “self learning” with approximately 350 miles, but I am going to have it tuned for better driveability
I am waiting on the fuel filler cap so it will be set flush in the bed and I can take out the periscope....
What doesn’t work: self cancelling turn signals. Still workingon that. Horn doesn’t work as I haven’t figured out how to interface the oldwheel (which I love) with the new column, so I may not have a horn…
I am VERY happy with its in town and highway manners. Still small things to sort out, but it starts immediately, drives straight, rides SUPER nice, and brakesare awesome. Disc brakes, powersteering, and sway bars really make these pickups driveable.
