1952 Chevrolet 3100 Pickup
Advance-Design was a pickup truck series by Chevrolet, their first major redesign after WWII. Its GMC counterpart was the GMC New Design. It was billed as a larger, stronger, and sleeker design in comparison to the earlier AK Series. First available on Saturday June 28, 1947, these trucks were sold with various minor changes over the years until March 25, 1955, when the Task Force Series trucks replaced the aging Advance-Design model.
Taking the Advance Design concept just a step or two further, this custom-built truck retains much of its original design, but with some very tastefully designed and carefully planned modifications is better than the original. This is true for the mechanicals as well as the visuals. I give you black beauty.
Exterior
A fresh (2019) respray of Black base coat and clear coat covers this curvaceous truck with its straight steel rust free panels, and curving fenders. Up front the headlights were frenched and simplified, the grille has been chromed and the bumper below is not to be outdone by the grille, is shiny and bright. A rear roll pan has been added as well as LED turn signal and brake lights. No rear bumper, and a lowering of the rear gate, and we have warm richly colored pine lining the bed. 15-inch polished wheels for all 4 corners of this truck, wrapped in 215/70R15's all around.
Interior
More fully buttoned up and black for the interior. The long bench with its stitched triangular pattern stretches from door to door, which also present in black. On the dash the black painted dash front provides a deep background for the white-faced Dolphin gauges, and the original re-chromed horizontal ribbed speaker grid, ashtray adornment and glove box cover door. The radio is a USA brand and has some extra woofers and tweeters behind the seats. Fronting the dash is an adjustable Ididit steering column and wheel. Sticking out proudly within reach the driver is a Lokar shifter. New floors were put in during the original restoration, and now have a Hush mat covering them along with fresh carpet (2019). Keeping it simple but elegant is the mantra for the interior. Like an expensive tuxedo, all dressed up and ready to go out.
Drivetrain
A 350ci rebuilt engine with a consigner stated 330hp, this snazzy mill is topped by a 4-barrel Holley carburetor and backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission. On the rear of the truck is now a Pontiac 10-bolt 2.73 posi axle. Headers have been bolted on, and an all aluminum 3 core radiator with a 16-inch fan keeps this hot engine cool.
Undercarriage
A Mustang II front end with a sway bar and 2-inch drop spindles is now upfront and a 4 link with coilers is on the rear. A custom Denny's driveshaft has been installed, and all flex steel brake hoses are now on. We note drilled and slotted front rotors. The fuel tank is an under-bed version and has a flush fuel filler attached. Nicely done underneath.
Drive-Ability
Before getting in I gave this truck a glance and it is well done. I slipped inside on the triangular stitched bench and I was in black heaven. The white-faced gauges awaited me to turn the key and all came to life really quickly. Off I went and I have to say in does not drive like a truck! Smooth acceleration, nice power and even good handling. The power brakes grabbed well, and the truck was an overall joy to drive.
A fun restoration, back in black, a sweet warm colored pine bed liner, sexy polished wheels and a stunning interior and we have a beautiful build, all dressed up and ready to be driven.
