1975 Chevrolet Caprice Convertible
The Caprice name was coined by Bob Lund (Chevrolet's General Sales Manager) after a classy restaurant he frequented in New York City. Others say the car was named after Caprice Chapman, daughter of auto executive and influential Indy-car official James P. Chapman.
For consignment gracing our halls here at Classic Auto Mall we have a '75 Caprice convertible. Dressed in triple white, it presents with low (61,459) original miles, is clean and well kept, and has been in the same family since 1985.
Exterior
White as the driven snow a White canvas convertible top with a glass rear window covers the top. With the push of a switch the top moves up and down with ease. White body panels with some previous repairs for rust are noted, and it appears as the rust is returning, with paint flaking off and what was repainted is a different white than the original respray. A long hood fronted by a grille with chrome that also shows some dulling and rust in minor form but seen throughout the chrome and badging. The long trunk culminates at the back with triple taillights, and dual chrome tipped exhaust sticking out below. Wire wheel covers in very nice shape cover wheel on all 4 corners.
Interior
Whiter with stitched vinyl uppers and plastic lowers and just a hint of wood appliqu for the door panels. These house the power lock switches, power windows, and a remote toggle for the driver's side mirror. Turning our attention to the passenger area, dual white benches, a split version upfront and a full rear bench, float in a sea of red carpeting in good condition. Accenting the seats are red seat belts for all passengers. A red dash fronts the passengers and shows clean red padded vinyl, and some more wood appliqu panels. Gauges and warning lights are all clean and working. Noted A/C and heat are in-operable. A few faults in the red where something in a past life was stuck on then when it was removed it took some of the top coating of the vinyl off.
Drivetrain
A 454ci V8 which has the correct build time to be original to the car, but due to no vin stamping on the block so we cannot confirm numbers matching. The engine appears in unrestored condition and has plenty of patina, and some overall dirt. A single 4-barrel carburetor is on top, and a numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is behind the engine. Also noted is a 10-bolt rear.
Undercarriage
Very clean with nice undercoating and just slight areas of minor surface rust. The gas tank looks like new as does the dual exhaust. We see independent coil springs upfront, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear. Power disc brakes for the front and power drums for the rear. Overall nice and clean underneath.
Drive-Ability
Starts right up and took right off when we flipped into the D position. Shifted smoothly, and the 4-barrel gives it a kick even though this car is big. Steering was smooth, and it is a nice cruiser.
There is something about a white car that presents nicely, it just looks like additional class. The red accenting, wire wheel covers, and power top don't hurt the image either. This car is a turn key and a have fun car, as it is ready to go. A few faults, but certainly nothing to make it a game changer. I'll have mine in white!
