1965 Chevrolet Nova SS
Chevrolet designer Clare MacKichan recalled about creating the Chevy II: "There was no time for experimentation or doodling around with new ideas from either the engineers or from us in design; And it had to be a basic-type car." The 1962 Chevy II rode a 110-inch wheelbase, compared to 109.5 for the Ford Falcon, at which Chevy's new compact was aimed. "I think that was the quickest program we ever did at any time," he continued. "We worked night and day on that car, and it didn't take very long to run it through our shop because we had a deadline." And that is what made the Chevy II one of the fastest new-car development programs in GM history just 18 months after the designers got the green light, the first production Chevy II rolled off the Willow Run, Michigan, assembly line in August 1961, in time for its September 29 introduction.
For consignment a nicely restored and upgraded engine 65 Nova SS. Born with an inline 6-cylinder engine, and in the color maroon, we now see it bedecked with orange and all brite work and chrome has been blackened. In the loose form of a Halloween-esque theme, and with an engine upgrade, we now have a 65 nova that is wicked fast.
Exterior
This all steel coupe with its straight lines, good gaps, and really nice paint, has been well sorted out during the restoration. All brite work and chrome as well as badging, has been powder coated in a gloss black, and is in very good non dimpled condition, so it was attended to prior to the black cloaking. For 1965 a cleaner front-end styling courtesy of a fresh full-width grille with new integrated headlight bezels. Parking lights moved down to the deep-section bumper, and sedans gained a new roofline. Taillight and backup lights were restyled, as was the rear cove. All these stylings are now black. 17" Foose wheels are black, and 215/45R17 black wall rubber is on all 4 corners. Truly now a werewolf in sheep's clothing.
Interior
Appearing original, in black with bucket seats wearing textured vinyl trim, and the dashboard holding ammeter, oil pressure, and temperature gauges. Some of the chromed trim is dulling, and slight wear off of the chrome has crept in, but for being original, is nicely preserved. The steering wheel a rally style in wood protrudes from the dash. A brushed-chrome console with floor mounted automatic shifter, runs rearward, and ends behind the buckets. A rear bench stretches from door to door, and above hangs a new, tight, black headliner. Carpeting is in good condition and appears to have been replaced since original. Seeing that the interior is original, it is looking scary good.
Drivetrain
Within the confines of the engine bay is replaced a 350ci V8 which according to our crack decoder is a CKB block circa 1974. This mill has had a complete refresh in 2015. It is topped with a new 4-barrel carburetor and back up by a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission. This engine/transmission combination now makes this car is a screamer.
Undercarriage
Nicely sorted out with a new fuel tank, new 2" exhaust, and all within total black surrounds. Underneath also greets us with a 10-bolt rear, independent front, and leaf spring rear suspensions, and drum brakes all around. With no rust in sight, and an orange Chevrolet block, no rust on bottoms of doors, or rockers, it is an absolute treat to look around under here and be assured there are no tricks.
Think about if you showed up to all your old haunts in this classic beauty. You will possess all the new wizardry, have an interesting color combination, and original interior. Not to mention Foose wheels, a 350ci V8, and straight steel. This is due to being the beneficiary of a total once over with new paint, powder coating the chrome to black, and engine refresh, electric fuel pump, and new water pump. All this coming together to make a potion for a great classic early grocery getter now muscle car.
