1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Over the past 105 years, Chevrolet has built such a vast empire of lovable offerings that some of them just seem to get overlooked. Possibly the most substantial victim of that unfortunate phenomenon is the storied Monte Carlo. Introduced in 1970, and proudly parked in over half a million driveways during its first three years of production, the brand's 'personal luxury coupe' was decidedly cool. And, not as ostentatious as a Corvette or as boorish as a Camaro, the car spent most of its life as the poster child for evolving automotive tastes.
This classy Monte is a solid cruiser that's benefitted from careful restoration as needed. And if you're looking for an awesome classic that's clean, attractive and ready to roll, you simply won't find more muscle for the money! Especially with the upgrades it has.
Exterior
A shiny new Black vinyl top starts off, and this tops a nice metallic gray respray, which covers solid rust-free coke bottle design steel. Badging, trim, and chrome show some signs of wear with the beginnings of rust on the bumpers, some pitting and dimpling on the side mirrors, and some peeling on the badging. Rally wheels have been added on all 4 corners. Window trim is in good condition all around, as is glass. 17" Rally wheels appear in fair to good condition.
Interior
A swing of the door, and we are met with vertical stitched black rectangular vinyl panels, and a row of buttons in the middle of the panels. Door pulls show slight chipping on the chromed trim, and window crank is pitted slightly. Moving to the interior we can see black tuck and roll vinyl bucket seats, with a center console racing up the middle to the dash. This console has some burl wood trim, and a nifty dual post Starship Enterprise shift lever...Warp speed Mr. Sulu! A nice burl dash has the rally gauge pack, an AM/FM/Bluetooth radio with Bose speakers, and A/C. Carpet and headliner ground all the tuck and roll vinyl in this car and are in good condition. A shout out to the trunk which has a new liner and is pristine.
Drivetrain
Starting life as a column shifted automatic (we can note the PRNDL2 and L1 Indicator just above the steering column in the speedometer), it's now that snazzy Shiftworks shifter in the console and it works a 700R4 automatic transmission. This is attached to a fuel injected 454ci V8 with a serpentine belt drive, 160 AMP alternator, 2" stainless headers, and a full stainless exhaust. This engine replaces the born with 350ci V8 that had a mere 270hp. All this resides in a nicely restored engine bay.
Undercarriage
Patina and slight surface rust is noted underneath, but nothing remarkable and out of the ordinary. Lots of black painted rust-free steel under here. A 12-bolt rear, Corvette C5 front disc brakes, and Trans AM W56 rear disc brakes, and tubular upper and lower control arms. All solid and ready to roll.
A good clean example of the 71 Monte Carlo, second year of Generation 1, buttoned up, painted, and cleaned up interior with some restoration, we have a good example of some serious power and good early 1970's looks. A few faults, but certainly not serious, and some polishing of chrome would take this car to the next level.
