1965 Chevrolet Corvette No Additional Info:
1965 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible SCCA Race Car
I bought the car in 2016 in a completely unrestored condition as it had sat for about 33 years in a garage in Texas. The car was complete and original to the last time it was raced including some minor damage to the front one piece clip and missing lower chin spoiler. I had this all fixed and replaced the missing front grille and lip spoiler with period correct parts.
I had the motor rebuilt by a local race shop as a 427 and included with the sale is the original 454 rotating assembly which is dated and named to the previous owner from 1980. I had the engine rebuilt as a 427 as this is the largest capacity engine a C2 Corvette can be for SVRA racing. The car has an original complete weld in roll cage with the number 29 054 (29 means Ohio Valley SCCA Region and 054 is 54th roll cage registered)
The original M-22 gearbox was stripped and rebuilt as was the rear 3.08 differential. The half shafts have been replaced and the original ones are again included. The J56 brakes were all rebuilt using the original calipers and the rotors and pads replaced with new items. The shock absorbers were all replaced with new heavy duty ones. The sway bar bushes on the rear were replaced and all four hubs were replaced and include upgraded bearings and new welded in ARP racing studs.
The radiator, water pump, alternator (it didn't have an alternator originally) are all new. The carburetor is new and built for racing by a local race mechanic and an MSD distributor and was fitted to replace the original Accel unit.
The original magnesium Torque Thrust D style 15" wheels were stripped and refurbished and are fitted with a set of road tires. I also bought a set of new American Racing Torque Thrust D 15" wheels and fitted them with the correct Hoosier Slick tires required by the SVRA for racing.
The body has flared arches correct to the period the car raced which from what I have found out is from about 1975 to 1982. It raced originally with a small block and later the big block. I found some SCCA history for the car detailing 3 races from 1976/77 and it also competed in 1979 and 1982.
The original ZL1 heads (casting numbers 3946074) were used when the engine was rebuilt and the block is original. The rotating assembly has been replaced as part of the rebuild to bring the capacity down to 427CI.
The fuel system needed to be completely replaced and it has an ATL Fuel Cell similar to the one that came out of the car. All of the fuel hoses and both fuel pumps have been replaced. The fire has a complete and brand new fire suppression system with remote trigger as per SVRA regulations.
The car drives great and has lots of power the only lights are the brake lights. The car will be sold on a Bill of Sale basis as it did not come with a Title as the previous owner passed and his partner had no idea as to where a title was. It is quite possible because the car raced in Ohio before Texas that the Title never made it as far as Texas.
I know a little about both of the owners who raced the car and have a few in period pictures from my research.
If you are looking for a race car for SVRA or other historic racing this could be the car for you as it is very original and still wears it's late 1970's paint scheme, I also have pictures of how it raced in the mid 70's.
