1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Additional Info:

This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle totally nails it on every single level. One, awesome color combination of silver with a black top and burgundy interior. Two, there's a monster bog block motor under the hood, matted to gear bangin' 4-speed. And three, dig the price tag, which is a fraction of the cost to restore it to this level. They simply don't get much cooler than this. For those of you looking for yet another fake SS, move on, this isn't for you. But if you want one of the best-looking, most potent A-bodies we've featured in a long time, you've come to the right place. That's right, it's not an SS, which makes it even more appealing in our eyes. The bodywork was simply straightened and refinished in bright Cortez Silver, giving it a grown-up look that will still get a lot of attention, especially with all those red SS cars covered in stripes hanging around. It still wears its original hood with two smallish faux vents and a non-SS grille up front. Correct Chevelle script emblems are in place, the chrome bumpers shine up brilliantly, and all the stainless took a trip past the polisher before being strapped back into place. Workmanship is excellent throughout, with a great gloss, good panel alignment, and a depth to the paint that only comes with lots of hand labor. The black vinyl top is in excellent condition with no signs of trouble underneath and no fading or tears up top.The burgundy interior is really what makes this car special. Far more sophisticated than basic black, it's beautifully refinished with lots of fresh parts, including seat covers, door panels, and black carpets to anchor everything. The center console holds a Hurst shifter for the Muncie 4-speed underneath, and it comes complete with a cue ball knob. Original gauges in a Chevelle cover only the basics, so there's an Auto Gauge tach strapped to the steering column and a cool set of auxiliary dials down on the console, factory-style. An AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit fits neatly in the dash and remains unobtrusive, and the three-spoke steering wheel looks familiar but offers a slighter fatter rim that's easy to grip in the heat of combat. It also includes a very clean trunk with no secrets and nothing to hide.Yes, the car is badged as a 427, but now is powered by a torquey 454 CI V8, and it's safe to assume that it's got plenty of horsepower on tap as well. It's nicely detailed with chrome valve covers, an aluminum intake, and a big Holley carburetor up top. A factory HEI-style ignition system gives it good street manners, although there's obviously a cam inside. The engine is black, giving the engine bay a neat monochromatic look, and almost everything you see is recent, from the alternator to the power brake booster. Underneath, the front and rear suspensions have been augmented with Hotchkis sway bars to firm up the handling. Long-tube headers and a cackling Flowmaster exhaust system provide the proper soundtrack, and nobody is going to mistake this Chevelle for mom's grocery-getter. There's also a new gas tank out back, a 10-bolt rear end, and discreet polished exhaust tips that are just right on this low-key Chevy. It nails the perfect stance and sits on 14-inch SS wheels with staggered BFG radials.Sometimes great colors and a use of restraint can do more than flashy stripes and a fake pedigree, and this Chevelle is the ideal example of getting everything right.
