Vehicle Overview 1969 El Camino SS 396 Clone
427 Big Block
This El Camino may not be an original SS but it sure gives the real one a run for its money.
Purchased in an auction roughly 10 years ago. That is when the love and time started being put into this vehicle. The engine is a built Chevrolet period 427 with iron heads that have been beautifully and heavily ported and polished. The seller pulled the engine, farmed out the heads for a complete rebuild, installed a new cam, painted and cleaned anything he could, and reassembled and reinstalled the engine. This was finished by spring of 2015. Since then he mainly drove to car shows in the spring and fall.
The Engine:
Bottom end: 4 bolt block, forged steel cross drilled crank, 10.5 to 1 compression, Speed Pro rings and 2385P forged pistons, HD rods, and high volume oil pump. Main bearings and cylinder walls looked great so he didn't do anything. Retained the oversized Milodon oil pan.
Top end: Complete head rebuild including new ss valves, seals, guides, keepers, push rods, and hydraulic flat tappet lifters. Original Comp Cams 1.7 roller rockers were retained. Heads were shaved .007 to insure flatness. Comp Cams 11-205-3 cam installed and, that cam combined with all the engine features would yield 500+ horsepower. The original cam gear drive was retained. On top of the engine is a Weiland 8018 dual plane intake manifold and a new Holly 850 double pumper.
Drivetrain: Muncie 4 speed transmission M-22 Rock Crusher and 411 geared 12 bolt rear end.
Hooker 2 headers, 3 exhaust with Flowmasters, Hurst shifter, 4 core radiator with dual high flow electric fans and shroud, MSD 6AL ignition, high torque mini started and a switched high volume Holly electric fuel pump.
This is an El Camino SS 396 CLONE.
Shop work was professionally performed and the seller did the assembly.
The engine was designed and built to get the car from stop light to stop light as fast as possible.
