Little Rare Riding Truck
If you have a passion for clean, un-molested, very original classic cars, you're going to like Red.While on CL, I spotted, what appeared to be, a true ''Survivor" GMC stepside in Tucson Az, but the high price discouraged me from ever calling on it.
Like the car guy I am, I gave in to the charm of this little pickup and drove down to see it with my own two eyes. There it stood, super straight, very original, and extremely faded from the AZ sun. But even with a cracked dash, chip out of the grill and original Red paint oxidized to pink... this truck looked terrific! Further inspection revealed just how amazing this truck really was. There are no signs of collision or signs the truck had ever been taken apart. The body was very straight, and ZERO rust. The rocker panels, inner fenders, door bottoms, cowl, nooks and crannies, frame, bed sides... all straight, relatively clean, and desert dry! (scratch head now) How does a pickup truck make it 32 years unscathed?? This truck has obviously enjoyed a very easy life.
The original owner special ordered the truck with a rare 305HO (High Output) engine which is also fuel injected. That engine is mated to a very rare 4 speed on the floor transmission. Rare that first gear is NOT a granny gear, and that 4th gear is an OVERDRIVE gear. This makes the pickup both easy to drive around town and exceptional on the interstate. The last of the rare options is the "swing down" spare tire carrier. Other options include cold Air Conditioning, Power Steering and Power Brakes. *Please note how unmolested that engine bay is.
For my personal taste and to still retain the trucks authentic look, I installed a mild drop. I installed dropped spindles and a flip kit in the rear. I also added a fresh new carpet kit, a Bluetooth sound system and a Flowmaster muffler to add to it's new Hot Rod personality. I also washed the oxidation off with soapy water and a shot of Comet/Ajax. Note- For a slight fee I can return the pickup to it's original height and remove the sound system.
I have driven this truck every day since the day I drove it home from Tucson. You will agree, this truck is a joy to drive! It looks great, gets tons of attention on the road. It steers nicely, shifts effortlessly, brakes well, sounds bitchin, and pumps out ice cold AC. Note- Please don't let the 305 engine scare you off. This 305HO V8 will lay down the rubber if you choose!
The amp gauge does not work, and fuel gauge only work below 1/4 tank. I must also mention, and it is hard to tell, but the original owner had the lower half of both doors spotted in where the paint was scratched from a company logo removal. Also note a small dent above the right front fender well.
Final notes- Sure you can patch and paint any old truck and put it in line with all the other restorations, but you can't buy this authentic charm. Barn Finds and Survivor classic cars are bringing top dollar at auto auction. Why.... because they are only original once!
Bid strong and don't let this one get away. How often do nicely optioned, unmolested, bone dry, 1/2 ton shortbeds come along? Especially wearing its "natural patina" original Red paint? Never again.
Please inquire if you any questions about the truck. Randy 280-292-0321 in Mesa AZ. Thank you!
eBay auto auctions are business, not a game to play. DO NOT BID if you don't intend to follow through with the sale.
