1986 Chevy C30 Car Hauler: An all-new clean sheet redesign of General Motors’ Chevrolet and GMC brand C/K-Series pickups débuted in mid-1972 for the 1973 model year. Development of the new third-generation trucks began in 1968 with vehicle components undergoing simulated testing on computers before the first prototype pickups were even built for real world testing. The redesign was revolutionary in appearance at the time, particularly the cab, departing from typical American pickup truck designs of the era. Aside frombeing near twins, the Chevrolet and GMC pickups looked like nothing else on the road. The third-generation trucks are colloquially known as the “Square-body” or “Box-body” generation. GM’s design engineers fashioned the “Rounded-line” exterior in an effort to help improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, using wind tunnel technology to help them sculpt the body. Other design traits include sleek sculpted body work, an aerodynamic cab with steep windshield rake, and a unique available hidden radio antenna embedded into the windshield glass. The wheelbase length was extended to 117.5 in (2,985 mm) for the short wheelbase pickups, and 131.5 in (3,340 mm) for the long wheelbase pickups. A new dual rear wheel option called “Big Dooley” was introduced on one-ton pickups, along with a new Crew Cab option on the 164.5 in (4,178 mm) wheelbase. An optional Elimipitch camper was made available for the Big Dooley. Crew Cabs were available on C30 pickup and chassis cab, and K20 chassis cab models in two versions: a “3+3” which seated up to six occupants and “bonus cab” which deleted the rear seat and added rear lockable storage in its place. The fuel tank was moved from the cab to the outside of the frame, and a dual tank option was available which brought fuel capacity to 40 US gallons.When we located this classic dually in central TX, we knew we had to own it. It has the highly-popular square-body looks paired with a rugged Hodges manufactured car hauler bed. We are always moving vehicles around town and this truck is a far better alternative to spending $50-60k on a similar set up with a newer truck. But, we are not in the vehicle collection business so everything is always for sale. What you are purchasing is a well maintained, highly original C30 with only 120k miles since new. It is nicely optioned with a powerful 454, 4 speed transmission, cold A/C, factory AM radio, dual tanks, power windows and power locks. We have gone through the entire truck to make sure everything works like it should. The Hodges Bed (which runs about $10k painted) is in excellent shape and features a headache rack, deck lighting, winch, slide-out ramps, two side storage boxes, and a towing package. The interior is in excellent condition with no seat rips, no dash cracks, nor sagging headliners found on other trucks. All the gauges work like they should and there are auxiliary gauges mounted below dash as well for engine temp, volts, and oil psi. The paint does have some sun fading and we considered a complete repaint. But this truck would be an excellent shop truck or mobile advertising for any automotive related business. Therefore we decided that the knew owner would be best suited to decide how they want to paint or wrap her. Mechanically this truck drives very solid. It starts easily, shifts smoothly, brakes well, steers tight, and has not leaked a drop on us. We wouldn’t hesitate to drive it any distance. This C30 is a truly unique asset to any collection or automotive business. It won’t disappoint so do let it slip away!
