1972 Chevrolet Corvette Additional Info:
Up for auction - 1972 Corvtette Stingray - NO RESERVE
1972 corvette in original mille miglia red over tan. Optioned with 350/TH400, PB/PS, deluxe interior, tilt/telescoping wheel, AC, power windows, 3 point harness. 144K miles since new.
Originality - The 350 engine is not numbers matching. It was replaced in 2004 with a rebuilt unit from Jasper motors. Carburetor, distributor and other items remain original. Transmission is a TH400. I am not sure if it is original to the car. The paint could potentially be original, but I can not confirm.
Paint & Body - The paint is generally very nice and shines great. There are touch up areas here and there. The hood is showing some checking from the engine heat. It is hard to see from about 5 feet away, but visible up close. All other panels are free of checking and show very well. The body has three spots that would need attention to make it perfect. #1 is the lower chin spoiler. Previous owner kissed a curb while parking and cracked it. Not visible unless you look under the car,
but there. #2 is a crack near the rear bumper. #3 is a small crack on the driver side front inner wheel well. Again, not very visible, but present. The body is original and does not look like it was restored. Dimples are still visible on the nose. There is no rust on the car nor in the bird cage. I got it in CA and that is where it spent most of it's life. From 5 feet, it looks amazing. Come closer and you start to notice minor paint touch ups & the checking in the hood. It is not a #1 show quality
finish, but certainly very presentable for any cruise night or show.
Interior - Here is where this car shines. The interior is just about flawless. Everything is in superb condition. Seats, carpet....etc have all been replaced. That alone is great, but what makes this car so nice is the fact that all the gauges are vivid, bright and functional (even the clock works). Dash is perfect, console and center stack is super nice. Rear storage compartment is just as nice. All courtesy lights work as they should. Power windows work as they should. T-tops come out
easy and do not rattle when in place. Rear window is removable and stored in the storage area as intended when removed. All inside lighting including gauge lights are functional and bright. Door panels are perfect. The interior of this car is a pleasure to be in. Doors open and close as they should.
Mechanical - Way too much to list in this area as so much has been replaced. All major systems have been addressed. New gas tank, new brakes, new suspension components (shocks, bushings etc), new steering components. Rebuilt engine, caburetor, distributor. I dont think there is much on this car that has not been serviced. It runs perfect and drives even better. No smoke, no noises, no hesitations or bogs. Plenty of power for a standard 350 and will light up the tires at will.
Oil pressure when cold is 65-70. When hot it is 30-35. Here in the FL summers the coolant temperature is 160-170 without the AC. With the AC it is around 190-195. This car will never run hot. The AC worked perfect until I leaned on a compressor line by accident and cracked it. Being that it is winter here in FL, I have not replaced it. Once the line is replaced and system charged, it is guaranteed to work as it did before. The blower blows strong on all fan speeds.
Not a slight breeze, it blows strong which is rare for a C3. TH400 is superb and shifts perfect at all times. Reverse lights do work. There are no vibrations at any speed. Cruise down the local streets at 40 or on the freeway at 80. This car was originally optioned with a 3.70 gear. That has been chaged to a 3.08 for friendlier cruising. Everything in the rear was replaced when the gears where done. The brake calipers are new and brakes work great. Vacuum system is also all new. Lights come up and down as they should. Wiper door also works as expected, as do the wipers. Exhaust is new with 2.5" pipes and factory style mufflers and tips. No headaches, no drone. Smooth exhaust tone so you can drive anywhere without getting a migraine. Tires are excellent. Idles smooth at 700rpm and
cruises straight with no rattles or noises.
Overview - This is obviously not a #1 trailer queen. The paint is not 100% perfect, but nice enough to take pride in. The nice thing with this car is you can drive it anywhere and not be afraid to park it. Mechanically it is sound so turn the key, drive it where you want to go and leave it without stress that some bird is going to bomb it. Generally, it is a very complete and original example of a 72 corvette. Yes the engine is not numbers matching, but sitting inside, driving and looking at the car trully takes you back to 72. It does everything the way it was supposed to do it back in 72. And it does it reliably. My wife and I took this car from tampa to key west and it didnt skip a beat. Not hot rodded, and not made to be what it isn't. Just an honest 72 stingray.
If you are looking for a #1 trailer queen, this is not your car. If you want a very nice driver that you can take anywhere, this car certainly deserves a look.
