Without a factory build sheet, it can be difficult to determine a “real” 1970 SS Camaro, Chevelle or Nova. This is because in 1970 (and a few other years too), there was no SS code inserted into the car VIN number.
I believe there is overwhelming evidence to determine this is a “real” 1970 Camaro SS 396. Here are the codes in chronological order of build:
1. Engine Casting date code: (date the engine block was cast)
a. A26 70 – see pic
b. This code is located on the back of the engine block, on the bell housing flange – hard to find, hard to photograph
c. A26 70 decodes as January 26, 1970
2. Engine Assembly Date
a. 0429 – see pic
b. This code is located on the front of the engine pad, next to the suffix code
c. 0429 decodes as April 29
d. So we know that this engine was assembled on April 29, 1970
3. Engine Suffix Code
a. Suffix code is located on a block pad on the front of the engine
b. In 1970, the CTW code was decoded as a 396 engine 350 horsepower with automatic transmission for the Camaro SS as well Nova SS and the Chevelle SS high performance models (HP)
4. Engine Assembly Plant
a. T – see pic
b. This code is located on the pad on the front of the engine, next to assembly date and suffix code
c. T decodes as Tonawanda
5. Car Assembly Date (body trim tag)
a. 05B – see pic
b. The trim tag is located on the cowl
c. 05B decodes as the second week of May
d. So we know the car was assembled the second week of May
6. L34 RPO Engine Code on Car Trim Tag (body trim tag)
a. L34 – see pic
b. Trim tag is located on the cowl
c. L34 decodes as 396 engine with 350 horsepower for the Camaro SS 396
d. The L34 was used for the Camaro SS 396
7. VIN number on the car dash pad
a. N – see pic
b. The dash VIN is visible through the windshield
c. N decodes as Norwood
d. 542482 unit number
e. Unit 542482 corresponds to Camaro SS being assembled in Norwood during the second week of May – per Camaro GM records
8. VIN number matches on title, dash pad and engine block
a. Last three digits of VIN is 482
b. VIN on dash pad – see pic
c. VIN on back of engine block – see pic
i. This VIN code is located on a pad on the back of the engine block, near the oil filter. Difficult to see and photograph
ii. In 1970 Camaro 396 engines, the last three digits of the body VIN were stamped on the back of the block at the time of car assembly. Same VIN on engine and body trim tag and car title.
9.The L34 code trim tag was only used for the Camaro SS 396 cars
10. This 1970 396 Engine has the CTW suffix code which was used for the 1970 Camaro SS RPO L34
11. This 1970 Camaro has the same 482 VIN on the title, body trim tag and engine
12. This 1970 Camaro has the 7,000 rpm tachometer which was used only for the SS 396 models.
13. This 1970 Camaro has the 12 bolt rear end – used for all 1970 Camaro SS 396 models
14. This 1970 Camaro has the Turbo 400 transmission – used for all 1970 Camaro SS 396 models with automatic transmission
