I spoke with the seller prior to purchasing the car on Feb. 11, 2011. It was purchased new in late 1967 by his brother, who was a soldier in Vietnam, returned home and purchased the car with his combat pay. It was an L79 car, which meant it had a high performance 327 cu. inch, 350 hp engine. It is one of the few 68's with the improved transistorized ignition system. It has the original four speed manual transmission and removable hard top in the body color.
Immediately upon taking delivery, the buyer had the dealer professionally install the L88 fender flares and big block hood. This car looks better than it did brand new! The brother drove it until his untimely death in a second tour in Vietnam in 1973. The car was then garaged for approx. 25 years.
In 2008 the owner decided to fix it up and sell it. At that point, it received new paint in the original color (LeMans Blue) and a new interior. Hitch Repair Service in Maryville, Tn. went through the engine to freshen it up. This rework included cleaning the engine, resurfacing the flywheel, grinding the crank, honing the block, installing new cam bearings, grinding the valves, installing new seats, and resurfacing the heads. He also cleaned and magna-fluxed the heads and did a vacuum and straight edge check. He put in new plugs, wires, dist. cap, main rod and cam bearings, installed 8 new connecting rods, new lifters a new water pump, rings, fuel pump, etc.Engine does not smoke or leak oil and sounds great with the new headers and exhaust system. (The original exhaust manifolds are included in the purchase.) The transmission has been rebuilt including a new shifter, and shifts as smooth as silk. New brake calipers and ceramic pads were installed on the front.
He also put on a new gas tank, intake manifold and four barrel carb. (The original intake manifold is also included in the purchase.) New gas shocks were installed at the same time. Many other parts, like new headlight door actuators and wiper door motor along with numerous new trim pieces were installed. A full set of American Racing Mags with B. F. Goodrich tires all around at a cost of $2,500 completed the makeover.
I completely rebuilt the transistorized distributor in March 2011 and put in a new battery and new seat belts. I had Al Knoch interiors install a new convertible top and new door panels at the Corvette Expo in Sevierville, Tn. I also purchased a new Vintage Air system and had it professionally installed.
Lovingly maintained, this is a beautiful 2 owner car that you can drive anywhere. A real head turner!
