ATTENTION COLLECTORS! The convertible Corvette was the pace car for the 70th annual Indy 500. All convertibles were designated Indy pace car replicas. The cars were shipped with the graphics in the trunk so the buyer could designate whether the graphics were applied or not. This car does not have the graphics. Of note, convertibles came with aluminum cylinder heads, which added 5 horsepower and shaved about 50 pounds from the nose of the car, so they're lighter and better balanced than the coupes. A new center brake light was added above the hatch to comply with new safety laws. A new ABS (anti-lock brake system) was standard, this prevented wheel lockup during heavy braking. The instrument cluster was tilted this year to prevent glare. The VATS security system became standard this year, this codes each key with an id that the car reads electronically to be sure it is the correct key before the engine will start.
Incredible original 1986 Red Convertible Vette with Tan Top with just 53,989 original miles. 1986 was a great year for another reason, too: the introduction of the 5.7 liter L98 V8 engine. This is, of course, the car's original, numbers-matching engine and with so few miles, it's only just broken-in. It's completely original under the hood, with only the usual service items having been replaced over the years.
I have owned this car since 1995 and it still runs good. The paint still looks good after 32 years, but it's not perfect being that old. The fact that it has been garage kept since I have owned it has helped greatly to preserve it. This was a present to myself after finishing graduate school. When I purchased it has approximatly 37,000 miles. The car is stored in North Carolina, at my father's home, so I need advanced notice is needed to view it. It does need freon for the A/C and the instructment cluster has been going out intermittently. This just started a couple months ago. The car is cranked about once a month. Drive's side seat does show signs of wear.
