This 63 Impala was built to resemble the 1963 light weight drag car… it was purchased from a South Georgia local Hot Rodder who was partners with the guy who owned Champion Chevrolet. Up until a year ago it was kept in a climate controlled warehouse and part of his personal collection. It was painted at the dealer in 2010 and they added a 3.73 gear and a big cam. I have the cam card as well as all the receipts on the recent work done.
The engine is a Chevy 327ci 300hp original but more now with the modifications… cam, intake, headers, carb, etc. The casting code on the back of the block is 3858180, suffix code looks to be EF. The car runs nice and cool with the new mods including big tube aluminum radiator, high volume water pump with 30% more flow, new hoses, Moroso 180 thermostat, and fan moved a little farther out of the shroud. Recent 130-mile cruise with 92 degree temps, it ran 185 all day. While changing to the performance intake manifold it was noticed that the lifter valley was painted with Gliptal as well as the lifter holes were grinded and smoothed, and the heads had ARP studs. Someone has spent some time and effort when this 327 was built. It also has a Corvette big balancer.
The 3.73 gear makes driving this car lots of fun, however it does run 3000 rpm at 62 mph. Not great but as stated above 185 all day at 3000 rpm. With today’s overdrive transmissions, we aren’t used to that, but this Chevy SB 327 seems to be very happy there… in my opinion! The car is quick for an old car and super fun to drive. It seems to be dependable and honestly would be a good car to drive everyday if you wanted to.
I have included at the end of the photos a picture of the car before when I had graphics like the light weight drag car. It is blank now and ready to do whatever the new owner pleases. Also included a photo of the cam card.
The underside of the car is solid with very minimal rust. The bottom valley of the trunk pan was replaced at one time.
This is not a perfect show queen but a super nice driver. Don’t expect a $50k show car because it’s not. But it’s a good and honest car.
