Purchaser to receive:
One beautiful 1968 Camaro Convertible assembled in Los Angeles California December 13th, 1967. This car is Code R Matador Red and has numbers matching and date coded 396ci MX code 350hp engine cooled by correct 4 row brass and copper radiator, big block shroud and 5 blade clutch fan. Date coded M21 close-ratio 4-speed Muncie transmission and dated coded12 bolt posi rear end with BR code. Front and rear option D80 spoilers are present with D90 striping and code 712 bucket seats. The car's cowl or trim tag has a 2 present after paint code which indicated two things: black striping and black convertible top. This was a special order option making this car more rare than other Matador red Camaros that came by default with only white striping and white top. A black top had to be specially designated!
I have had the privilege to inspect and take part in restoring many classical Chevrolet muscle cars and one thing I will say is that each car has its own strengths that shine. A few of these attributes on this car would be that it has the nicest rocker panels and truck floor I have ever seen on a GM muscle car. I suspect this has to do with being a LA car. This car has dated sheet metal: example the rear truck deck lid is dated 1967.

A further example not pertaining to this car would be the date code P8T13, meaning 1968 (8), December (T), 13th. The transmission was assembled December 13, 1967 for the 1968 model year.

GENERAL CAMARO PRODUCTION DATA FOR 1968 MODEL YEAR:In 1968 as the second year offering for the all new Camaro, demand was high and GM built 235,147 Camaros to satisfythis demand. To give you an idea of just how much demand there was in today's standards: today GM only builds around 70,000 Camaros a year. Now, lets drill this down by options. GM only built 16,927 V8 convertibles in 1968. This comes out to only 6% of Camaros built in 1968were V8 convertibles. In 1968, only 15,520Camaros were built with D80 front and rear spolier option, around 5%. Furthermore, only11,134 Camaros were built in 1968 with M21 close-ratio transmission, which is less than 5% of the Camaros produced in 1968 wereequipped with M21. Lets go even further! In 1968 only 2579 Camaros were built with L34 396 engine option, this is only 1% of allCamaros produced in 1968 out of the 235,147 built were equipped with L34 396 engine. Finally, this 1% or 2579 was the total was forboth coupe and convertible combined, so I suspect that there were only a handful of 1968 convertibles offered with L34 engine, that ismuch less than 1%. To give a final comparison: in 1968 there were 4575 Camaros built with L78 375hp engine. To my surprise, therewere 1996 more L78 396 optioned Camaros built in 1968 than the L34 optioned Camaros in the same year. As you can see this car hasrare special options installed from the R2 trim tag code, to L34 engine, to black convertible top, M21 transmission, U29 lighting option, BRPosi code--not to mention being a LA built car which is somewhat rare in itself!
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
I own and operate a full engine machine shop and dyno facility. I just finished completely rebuilding the engine in May 2017 including torque plate honing of engine block, new moly rings, new rod, main, and cam bearings, etc. The M21 transmission was also taken down to bare case at the same time and rebuilt, so no worn out gears or syncros. The M21 close ratio Muncie has correct #3925660 case and correct #3857584 tail housing with correct passenger mount speedometer cable along with correct #3884698 side cover for stud and nut mount shift linkage unique to only 1967 and 1968 Camaro.
The #3916323engine block in this car is still standard bore with genuine GM pistons part #385624. The block was honed in Sunnen Automatic hone with torque plates and new Hastings plasma moly rings were installed. Crankshaft is also genuine GM with GM forged connecting rods. The heads GM #3917215 were refurbished on Sunnen VGS-20 with multi-angle valve job and valves and guides replaced as needed. The oil pump and pickup in engine are genuine GM # 3906829 / 3904828.
The high rise intake #3883948 and carburetor #7028217 EG are both genuine GM. The carburetor was taken down to bare center section and fully rebuilt, including sealing fuel wells that tend to leak. The carburetor is 750cfm. The distributor is labeledwith part number 1111445 and is the correct points type distributor with GM/Delco cap and wires and spark plugs. The exhaust manifolds are correct number 3909878 and 3916178 dated 1967 with AIR smog holes, but plugged for smog pump delete. The air cleaner is correct wire pattern on element with correct base and correct silk screen AC Delco chrome lid. Engine hoses are GM part numbered with correct clamps. GM part numbered engine pulleys. Correct GM head and intake boltsare present.
The wheels on the car are genuine GM 50 years old, not repop (reproductions not offered) and are one year only for 1968 Camaro SS. This 1968 SS PO1 wheel option is so rare, I challenge you to find even one other Camaro in the entire country where these wheels were equipped and/or remain intact. The tires are NOS redlines, not repop Cokers. Antenna on car is correct. The alternator is numbered 1100814. The rear axle has been fully rebuilt, along with drive shaft and joints. Front end was fully rebuilt with new tie rod ends, ball joints, etc. The car has power steering and window washer bottle and squirters. Drive shaft is striped with white and orange inspection ring markings.
The car has correct heavy duty big block radiator and shroud, correct big block heater core, correct big block cross member, correct big block z-bar, correct big block engine frame mounts, and correct 5 leaf multi-leaf rear springs. Fan blade is 5 blade and has clutch. Also present is the correct raised simulated air intake on special hood (stack-type for 396-cu.-in. V8) and correct black rear panel for cars with 396 cubic-inch engine.
Convertible top is in excellent condition, as is interior of car, i.e. dash pad, door panels, carpet, chrome accents, seat covers etc have been replaced or restored. Several days were spent adjusting fenders, and doors, and hood fitment for good gaps. Door pins have been replaced and strikers adjusted so doors shut nicely. Door window glass has been adjusted and tracks lubricated so windows roll up nicely and in correct position with stops set on window tracks. Fuel gauge and speedometer are functional. Lights are functional, including rare U29 under dash courtesy lights when opening doors (only 7% of Camaros produced in 1968 with U29 RPO option). The exhaust system is in excellent condition and sounds awesome with the high horsepower 396 L34 engine. The paint has been water block sanded, buffed with compound, and waxed. The engine in this car is the highest horsepower available in 1968 next to the L78/L89 375hp option. While rated by GM at only 350hp at 5200rpm and 415 ft lbs torque at 3400rpm with 10.25:1 static compression ratio, these motors were under-rated at a very low RPM rating for insurance purposes. Furthermore, with the engine work and blueprinting of the engine just performed in May 2017, the motor is a real thrill to drive.
