1978 Chevrolet Monza Spyder Additional Info:
1978 Chevrolet Monza Spyder 2+2 Rare factory V8 4 Speed Runs and Drives showing 29,829 miles (unable to confirm so listed as 129,829) offered by Gas Monkey Garage . ! Originally slated to be released with the Wankle Rotary engine the Chevy Monza replaced the venerable Vega in in GM’s line up, albeit, without the Rotary engine as it proved to be too unreliable and thirsty during at a time when fuel consumption was a paramount concern throughout the industry. Instead Chevrolet elected to offer a number of proven power plants to the eager public. Many innovations such as GM’s first use of a Torque Arm rear suspension and the newly approved rectangular headlights along with “European Styling”(John DeLorean nicknamed it the "Italian Vega" comparing the styling to the Ferrari 365 GTC/4) earned the Monza Motor Trend’s prestigious “Car of the Year” award when it was released! This particular example caught my eye because it was optioned from the Factory with the more powerful 305CID V8 engine and rare 4 speed manual transmission along with the “Spyder” package. The engine still fires right up and powers through the 4 speed transmission and a brief test drive reveals a solid ride and firm braking. There are some minor items such as a shifter handle that is loose and a rattle that sounds like maybe an exhaust hanger that should be addressed (While this Monza 2+2 hatchback runs and drives, it should be completely serviced prior to any extended driving to ensure safety and reliability and due to our filming schedule we cannot perform any additional work on this car for you, SOLD AS IS/WHERE IS) The exterior is in fair condition with an older re-spray showing its age with nicks and chips and a dent behind the left front wheel as well as superficial rust on the roof (see all pics). The interior appears fairly complete missing a few trim items and the factory radio is no longer present. It would benefit from some TLC with seat covers over worn seats and the drivers floor carpet has seen better days as well as a sagging headliner (see all pics). Underside pics reveal a fairly solid chassis with superficial rust present on most components. Under hood pics show the factory 305 CID V8 is largely original and complete.
