I'm often asked where we find these unique rigs. One of my best workers cruises retirement home parking lots, our Elks club, the V.F.W hall and back alleys of the few working-class neighborhoods still left here in Seattle. He can spot a seatbelt slammed in a car door a mile away... He always notices when a vehicle's driving down the road with a turn signal left on just a little too long and he positively twitches with glee passing by a car or truck with metal bumpers. Over the years I've owned many vintage Chevy Pickups so you can imagine just how pleased I was when this classic Custom C20 rolled into the warehouse a few weeks ago.

Take a good look at my photos. It's easy to see the attentiveness and care taken by the past owner of this Chevy really paid off! With a casual glance you might think this is just another ol' truck. But, like I did, look a little closer and you'll realize what a find this thing really is! The first hint is when you check for rust in the usual spots. For those not familiar with the Pacific Northwest, specifically western Washington, we get our share of misty rain, but hardly ever any snow. At the first sign of a falling flake everyone panics and stays home. Truth is, our winter roads are rarely salted, so you'll see very few vehicles here with any serious rust issues! Climb over, under and around this rig - I know you'll come up smiling! The only corrosion issues we've come across appear to have been dealt with; both rockers below the doors were replaced by the previous owner.

When you open the hood, you're in for nice surprise. When the truck arrived at my warehouse last month we did a complete tune up. I believe this may be the original 327 CID V8. As my photos show, it's been upgraded with an Edelbrock Performer EPS aluminum hi-rise intake and 450CFM Edelbrock four barrel carburetor. The second you fire it up, you'll know it was built to last! I love the deep burble this strong motor makes. Added horsepower from the easy-breathing stainless steel headers, too! Factory installed power steering makes for easy turns! Please notice the well-crafted aluminum overflow tank mounted next to the radiator. It's likely custom made and adds nicely to the hot rod vibe. The Turbo Hydra-matic transmission is great and you've gotta love the look of the floor-mounted shifter. The glove box data plate shows factory heavy duty rear springs. Up in the cab you'll find full instrumentation. My mechanic added the column-mounted tach (something every vehicle should have) and the radio remote will arrive stashed in the glove compartment for the great Pioneer dash stereo. Though the odometer reads just over 63K, I have no idea if these are accurate miles (remember, it's only a five-digit counter). Look at my pictures of the bench seat. Both the cover and underlayment were redone a few years ago and it's in nearly perfect shape. Last week we added new stock contoured carpet that covers the entire floor area and beneath the seat. New chrome sill plates at that time, too. The Hurst-style floor shift functions just as a factory unit would: All the way forward for park, back one for neutral, one more for Drive 1 and lastly Drive low. There is no tranny lock-out switch.

Outside I know you'll also be impressed by the classic medium "Grotto Blue" solid paint. It's had one quality respray to that original color and is just about as clear and bright as the day this Custom C20 rolled off the Janesville Assembly line. Over the past six years the owner (who sold to us only because of an upcoming out-of-state move) added the nice bumper mounted quartz fog lamps, the hot rod style door mirrors and headlight covers. He also replaced the heater fan and added an under-dash toggle switch for it next to the fog light controls. Though I've always appreciated the look of stock steel wheels with "dog dish" covers, these modern eight-spoke chromies are a great upgrade without detracting from the vintage look. They're wrapped with Cooper "Discoverer" LT 235/85R16 Radials having at least 60-70 percent remaining tread all around.
