1952 Chevrolet Bel Air/150/210 Belair 2 Door Hardtop Additional Info:
NOTE: This auction has been revised since first being listed. Please read all information carefully before you bid!
This auction is for a 1952 Chevrolet Belair 2-door hardtop with automatic transmission. Although this car is a "project car" (the car does not run at this point), it is almost ready to be a nice little driver. Just needs a few things done to get it to that point. Due to failing health, we are not able to complete those tasks necessary to complete this very nice car. This Chevy was acquired in 2001 to be built as a prototype for our Show Car. It came from another "high desert" area in south central Washington State. When we purchased the car, it was a half-finished project car. It had been painted, the chrome work had been done, & the stainless trim had been straightened & polished. Having examined the car while working on it these past several years, we have found this car to be virtually rust free. It may have been in a minor accident at some time in the past, as one of the front bumper guards was bent; & we chose to replace it with an NOS one rather than straighten it. Some of the problems it had were immediately identified, & others were discovered as time passed.
These were the problems we encountered:
- paint flaking
- deteriorated wiring
- old interior
- rusty wheels with bad tires
Here is what we have done:
- replaced the low rider wheels & tires with Diamond Back 205/70R15 whitewalls (2011) mounted on 15 x 7 chrome wheels with centers painted to match body color & original style hubcaps (2001)
- had the interior redone (2008) using automotive fabric (including the trunk); new carpet has been installed & we repainted all the interior trim
- replaced the heat control knobs, garnish molding screws, sill plates, & polished the stainless trim
- replaced the entire front suspension (2011) with one that is completely rebuilt, including the installation of dropped spindle towers & arms to lower the frontend (these Chevys notoriously sat high in the front)
- rebuilt the carburetor, replaced the fuel pump, installed new belt & hoses, gave it a tune-up, serviced the radiator and replaced the heater valve, replaced the entire exhaust system, & detailed the engine & engine compartment; the Powerglide transmission & converter received a complete rebuild (2008)
- replaced the windshield, windshield & backglass seals, & tail light assemblies
The process of a conversion to 12 volt electrical system is almost complete. Also the forward wiring harness has been replaced.
This is what we were planning to do in the future, but due to health complications, we will not be able to accomplish these things:
- finish the 12 volt conversion
- install the new glove box; install horn ring & parts
- have the frontend aligned & brakes rebled
- install the rearview mirror
- have carpet reinstalled (removed for the transmission repair)
- install the new accelerator pedal
- verify that new starter has the correct gear and replace the solenoid with the correct configuration
Here is what we think needs to be done in addition to the above:
- the paint must be repaired; about 7 years ago it cracked on the hood & around the trunk lid. The paint is now about 17 years old & we see no additional flaking, so it would seem the paint is stable. Probably the bad areas occurred due to improper surface preparation. There is some oxidation (clearcoat) on the trunk lid. It is possible the bad spots can be painted & blended in, but it might be difficult to match the paint. It appears to be a "special mix metallic" with a light misting of gold metalflake. Probably a complete overcoat would be the best approach.
- following the paint repair, the lower trunk seal & door seals can be installed. We have the seals, & they will come with the car as part of this auction.
Due to health considerations, we are not able to complete the planned work & must sell the car "as is". It is very close to being a nice little "driver", but it does need a few things done before it can be driven.
NOTE: We have noticed that there is some flaking on the front bumper, so the whole bumper will need to be re-chromed.
NOTE OF CLARIFICATION: THIS CAR IS NOT RUNNING, SO IS NOT DRIVEABLE AT THIS TIME.
Please review the pictures carefully, & email with questions. As you can tell from the pictures, the paint has deteriorated, which is why we listed the paint repair as a "must" under things that need to be done.
We have described the car as accurately as we can. If you feel there is a discrepancy, or you have any questions, please feel free to email & ask questions.
NOTE: WE HAVE OVER $20,000 INVESTED IN THIS CAR.
