Just out of a client's collection, his 1967 Chevrolet Corvette is a true factory Rally Red over Black Leather Convertible per the original A.O. Smith trim tag. Nothing is known of its early history but it was upgraded to a freshly-built (but unfortunately non numbers-matching) 427/435hp with correct tri-power and GM side exhausts sometime prior to 1991, hen the client bought the car as you see it here. Sadly, t was represented to him as a numbers-matching car when he bought it and while the block is a 1967 427 and the Tonawanda stamping appears original, he VIN stamping next to it is far from correct. The Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission is, owever, umbers matching with a clear and correct original GM font stamp - a picture of both of these is farther down the listing.
I picked this up from the client, ave it a bath and then have proceeded to put a few hundred miles on it over the last few days. It is terrific in all respects. We're headed down to Amelia Island for the auctions and Concours, o I think I'll put this in the trailer and drive it around Fernandina Beach for a few days. If you have plans to be at Amelia Island this year, ome find me and have a look up close. You won't be sorry that you did!
We suspect that the entire car was stripped and repainted to a very high standard in the late 1980s or early 1990s using a modern 2-stage base and clearcoat. The match is excellent for a red car as there is some original red under the dash and in the rear compartment behind trim. The chrome is very likely original and is in surprisingly very good condition. There are very few reproduction items anywhere on this car and it is obvious that it was never a rough cast-off car but always lovingly cared for. We believe that the roughly 79,000 miles stated on the odometer are actual as they are in keeping with the condition of the largely-original interior.
As experts will point out, .O. Smith cars rarely had a 427 from new and never had side exhausts, ut unlike most of the 'clones' built in recent years, his car is not a hodge-podge of reproduction parts but largely made up from correct original GM NOS and restored accessories. The Kelsey Hayes wheels, ide exhausts, ood steering wheel and just about everything else I spot are all real parts. Even the front and rear lenses are correct 'Guide' script, ven the exhaust hardware is original stuff. On the alloys, nly one 'hubcap' is a reproduction piece out of the four!
Body and panel fit are excellent throughout - I've bought, old and looked at a lot of 'mid-year' Corvettes and there are no telltale signs here that this car has been hit or hacked up in its life.
The rear reflectors are a result of this car having been exported to Germany with the present owner and were likely added to pass the stringent TüV. This should be seen as a major bonus for European buyers as you won't have to go through this process again - it could not have been cheap to make this car pass!
As you can see, his car has the ferrules for an auxiliary hard top and we have an unrestored original vinyl-covered hardtop that can go with the car if you want it. We've ordered new hardware for the decklid top and sides as it was not held on properly and it's sitting in storage for the moment.
As you can see here, he car sits level all around, t was well set up and is a pleasure to drive.
Likewise down this side, ody gaps are even and everything fits nice and straight!
The windshield is a replacement but the vent and side window glass is original LOF.
Left side exhaust
Right side exhaust.
This may well be the original top - it has the remnant of the original white tag in the seam below the rear window and the weatherstripping is quite old!
This has been down for a long time but latches down well and stretches out nicely - it could use a day in the sun.
No tears, o holes and a clear back window, ery serviceable.
The inside of the top and the bows are very tidy.
This Corvette has a very well kept interior - the dash, onsole, oor panels and leather seats as well as at least part of the carpet are all original. It's nice to experience a well-kept and evenly aged 49 year old Corvette interior. Everything works apart from the radio and this only because a newer Sony stereo was mounted in the glove compartment, o it may well work if plugged back in.
There's nothing to suggest that the seats have ever been reupholstered and, or that matter, he carpet seems nicely aged so it may well be completely original. The seats are both still very comfortable and supportive.
You will notice that the door panel is also not a reproduction part but a very nice original.
The same is seen here on the right side.
The lap belts are also original!
The clock works a little too well, t runs a bit fast! Heater controls and blower fan work as they should.
The console appears original and is lightly worn commensurate with the rest of the interior.
The camera flash makes the carpet appear very faded out and it is not!
Jack and lug wrench behind the driver's seat in the cubby compartment.
Empty cubby behind the passenger's seat.
A reproduction owner's manual and a classic Sony hidden audio and cassette deck are in the glovebox. This old Sony system is very cool and still works just fine. The main unit is behind the dash.
Ticking over at a hot idle - lots of oil pressure (note the correct L71 tachometer and 80psi oil pressure gauge). Note the kilometer overlay on the speedometer. As stated above, e believe the mileage to be accurate - it is now about 100 miles more than stated here and will go up as we use the car during the coming week, have put a higher number in the eBay mileage field above.
Oil pressure shoots right up as soon as RPMs go over 1,000 RPM! This L71 is in very good health!
What we believe to be the original VIN and trim tags appear to have the correct original rivets.
This is not a cheap aftermarket big block hood and most of what lies beneath is also very well executed from lots of original parts.
The 427 fires right up and settles down to a good high idle when cold, hoke goes off quickly thereafter. Plug wires and some other details are not the original type but underhood preparation has been done more for reliability and driveability than for show.
Brake master cylinder and booster appear to be recent replacements. Hoses are newer. This car does everything well - I've put a few hundred miles on it and enjoyed every minute.
Close-up of the required ID tag affixed to the car by German authorities.
In addition to the upgraded aluminum radiator and oil cooler in front of said radiator, he heavy duty cooling system fan with clutch is working properly.
'T0403JE' translates to a 427/435hp built on the third of April. It's just a shame that the VIN was amateurly stamped into this pad as it was.
Here's a correct original transmission serial number stamping in the rear flange of the main case on the driver's side.
As mentioned above, he car had to pass the German inspection - and original sealed beams aren't acceptable to them.
The high beams light up the night! As you can tell, he headlight doors work well and open evenly.
The original hubcap on the left front wheel has some light pitting. All four wheels pictured above and beneath have nearly new Yokohama A008P Z-rated rubber. This is a great tire that they don't make any more and will keep this 'Vette planted - I used to use A008s unshaved for rain tires on a race car!
Left rear.
Right rear.
The right front cap is either new old stock or a good reproduction but has almost no age.
We have a lot more underneath photos as we performed a full pre-purchase inspection for a client who wanted a numbers-matching car prior to taking this car on consignment and will send the link for these to any serious buyer. Please inquire if this car really interests you. I can tell you that it is very solid throughout and handles and drives among the best of these I've ever had the pleasure to spend time with, eally automotive nirvana. I'm old fashioned when it comes to fun cars and I'd prefer to buy a well-sorted example such as this over one whose greatest attribute is a set of numbers that match. It doesn't hurt that the price of this is far, ar more attractive than an original red over black 435hp 'Vette.
payment/shipping
This car is being sold by a licensed and bonded dealer of fine used automobiles located in Savannah, eorgia. Please understand that this is an unusual 49 year old vintage car hand-built by men and not gods - and is thus sold as-is, here-is with no implied or stated warranty or guarantee; please be realistic about your expectations (i.e., f you expect it to run, tart and drive like a late model used car, uy one of those instead... though a 435hp 'Vette will outrun almost anything new...)
As stated above in the listing, e have looked over this car thoroughly and believe it to be in extremely good health based on many years of experience with other sports, lassic and unusual cars of all types over many years.
Full payment is due within seven days of auction close unless discussed with us in advance of your bid. Your winning bid is a contract to buy, ot just to look or for first right of refusal; the only reason your contract would be null and void is if it was found that we willingly misrepresented the car in the above description. If you feel you need to inspect the car prior to purchase, lease arrange and have this inspection done prior to placing a successful bid, e welcome your visit. Accepted forms of payment include a cleared certified cheque or wire transfer in the dealership's bank account, r cash in person on pickup (no cash via the mail, Bay!). We require that paperwork be completed prior to or at the time of pickup (should you do this in person) or filed back with us if done remotely. We do not charge any tax to out of state buyers as this is something you handle at the DMV or, aturally, ther dealers in all 50 states.
Shipping or pickup must occur within fourteen days of auction close unless discussed with us in advance of your bid. We are happy to refer you to one of the high-quality open or enclosed collector car shipping companies that we use frequently in the normal course of business - and we cannot stress enough the importance of using such a carrier and not a random transport broker or carrier you might find online, articularly as this is a unique vintage car in phenomenal condition. For international buyers, e can carry the car to the port of Savannah at no charge or to other ports for a nominal fee, hough shipping beyond the U.S. border must be entirely arranged for and paid by you. Please contact us if you need any assistance with logistics and we'll be happy to help.
We reserve the right to cancel all bids and end the auction early at any time during the course of the sale should a sale occur outside of eBay as the car has been offered quietly through other channels over the past week and will be actively marketing the car during this week at Amelia Island. We typically do not close auctions early at all and only when full payment has been received from such a buyer will the auction be pulled.
