1973 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Additional Info:
Up for bid is a rare and genuine 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle SS station wagon. The SS wagon was a one year only factory option, and this one has the Y in the VIN indicating a factory 454. Since records were not clearly kept in these years, it is unknown exactly how many were produced. It is estimated that about 1500 SS wagons were made, and roughly only 200 had the 454. This car is about 95% original, numbers matching with the 454 and turbo400 transmission. This car has all the proper badging in all the right spots and everything is there! I bought the car, covered in dust in a barn, about 4 and a half years ago in Colorado, where it had set for many years. There is very little rust on this car, located on the left rear quarter panel, but it is not rusted all the way through (can be seen in one of the pics). As was common with these cars, the spare tire carrier has some rust through the bottom and should be an easy fix. The floor pans are all solid, as well as the fenders, doors, and door jambs, and show no signs of rust. The rear hatch has a dent in it, where the original owner backed into his travel trailer, and I do have a replacement that will go with the car.
Mechanically, the car runs great! The engine was built by Chevrolet's Tonawanda plant in Buffalo, NY and still sports the decals on the valve covers. This 43,000 mile engine idles smooth without any knocks or clacks, and has the power to bust the tires lose or tow a trailer. There are a few small leaks in the 43 year old gaskets, but nothing major. All of the factory air conditioning components are there, but it blows a thermal overload when you turn it on. I have not looked into this problem, I always cruise with the windows down anyways so everyone can see how cool I look! The original smog pump is still on the car. All lights and blinkers work, as well as the wipers.
This particular car is the six passenger model, not the nine. The six passenger models had full rear side windows without the extra little vent window. The interior in the car is in okay shape, but could use some work. For being a 43 year old car, the dash is in incredible original shape, with only a hairline crack in one of the speaker grilles, no other cracks. All the gauges still work and are accurate, even the in dash clock! I added a temperature gauge mounted underneath the radio. The car is equipped with the state of the art factory 8 track player, but sadly does not work. There is one small rip in the headliner above the rear passenger seat. All the windows are tinted, with the front having a virtually clear UV blocking tint that helps protect the interior and keep temps regulated in the car. The rear of the car is tinted darker than the front doors to help with visibility. All windows manually roll up and down with no problems. The carpet is stained and faded and needs to be replaced, there are also some ripped / wore out areas in the driver's floor board. All door panels are original and correct with the proper badging. Both front and rear seats are still soft, but do have some tears in the lower seats. The rear seat folds down flat for a larger cargo area.
The original Turbine wheels are long gone and the wagon now sports 15" x 8" rally wheels on all four corners with the low profile derby caps. The rear tires are 275/60, and the fronts are 245/60.
I have a clear Texas title in my name and this beautiful specimen is always garaged, out of the wild Texas panhandle weather. This thing is FUN to drive and the suspension handles nicely withe very little rollover in the corners. The backseat usually sports a child safety seat as I load up the entire family for some great memories. If you have questions, feel free to contact me.
$1500 non refundable deposit is due within 24hrs of auction close, and the full payment must be made in seven days. Buyer is responsible for shipping. This car has no warranty and is sold as is.
