1979 Eldorado is considered the one of the best years to own. In the late 70's when GM started "experimenting" with computerized fuel injection the technology wasn't nearly as sophistacted as it is today. The 1979 has the reliable, easy to find parts for, long lasting, Oldsmobile 350 V8.
I bought this car from the second owner's grandson. He had spent time and money trying to get the car running while it had the original FI but never succeeded. Because it has the OLDs engine I knew it could be carbureted eliminating the Fuel Injection. Now it's a reliable, easy to maintain, driver. In the 3 years that I've owned it I have replaced the following:
·Transmission (professionally rebuilt)
·Tires
·Front driveshafts
·Front Shocks
·Rear Air Shocks (manual fill)
·Battery (less than a year ago)
·100 Amp New Alternator
·Idler Arm
·Pitman Arm
·Upper Ball Joints
·Rear Calipers
·Brake Pads Front and Rear
·Vintage Auto Sound radio
·Belts and Hoses
·Driver’s Seat Transmission
·Hood Struts
·Trunk Struts
·Rear window seals
·New HEI Distributor
·New Under hood pad still in the box
The radio antenna is disconnected but it works. I have new front calipers and rotors but the pads are new up front and the car stops beautifully so they are still in the boxes. The emergency brake works and automatically releases, as it should. A/C is cold, and heat is hot. I have the original 8 trackand CB radio but it didn’t work so I upgraded.I padded the steering wheel because the thin wheel aggravated the arthritis in my hands, but it is not cracked. The horn pad is from a different blue interior and not original. All lights and signals work.Chrome is beautiful. Underneath is amazingly rust free.
Bad Stuff:
Wiperdelaydoesn’t work. It’s a new washer pump and the washers workfine. Could be a wiring issue. It doesn't go out in the rain, so I didn’t spend time on it.
·Cruise doesn’t work, don’t know why. I’m not sure if it has to do with being carbureted or if it didn't work before the conversion.
·Hood has rust on the leading edges above theheadlights. It also has dings that I couldn’t photograph well. Repairable or an easy swap for a better hood with a white parts car.
·Vinyl top has a couple of flaws. Possibly repairable. No tears or rust underneath.
·Driver’s door at the very top has cracks where you would put your elbow with the window down.
This is a car that I drive to work, round trip 95 miles once a week. Highway 70-80 MPH. Fly into Greensboro NC, I’ll pick you up and you can drive home, anywhere, confidently.
