Assembled in Linden, New Jersey, this Cadillac is originally from Pennsylvania out of an estate of the original owner. He bought it from an intermediary who was lifetime friends of the original owner and knew the car from when it was new.
This Cadillac has approximately 12,000 actual miles and it drives as a 12,000-mile vehicle. The current owner conveys that this may be the “most exceptional” pre-owned Cadillac he has had from the 16 Cadillacs he has experienced in his possession.
The car is presented in “rare” Cranberry Firemist with white leather interior and white landau vinyl top. The owner states that the interior seating is very comfortable and that he finds it to be equal in comfort to Rolls-Royce models of the same period. Under the hood is a 472 CID V-8 engine mated to a Turbo Hydramatic three-speed automatic transmission.
At introduction in 1968, the new engine had a 4.30-inch bore and a 4.06-inch stroke for a displacement of 472 CID. “Extensively redesigned” to ease maintenance, it used only 90 percent as many parts and 75 percent as many gasketed joints as before. It delivered 375 horsepower at 4400 rpm and a massive 525 lbs·ft of torque at just 3000 rpm. It was used through 1974 and by that time, it made 205 horsepower.
The paint is in very good condition, with only minor imperfections visible at close range and some trim pieces may need replacement but overall, this car’s finish has held up well after 42 years! The landau roof is in fine condition, the windows and other glass panels are clear (rear defroster included) and crack-free and the lights are intact and free of blemishes. The car rolls on Kelly Navigator 600 rubber, size 235/75R15, wrapped around steel wheels capped with factory wheel covers. Body panels are straight and the bumpers shine brilliantly.
The interior reflects the low mileage on the odometer. The white seats are sumptuous and inviting, the cranberry-colored carpet looks nearly showroom-new and the contrasting headliner is in good shape. The dashboard is crack-free and in fine condition, as are the three-spoke steering wheel, door panels, package shelf, mirrors and gear shift lever. A factory AM/FM stereo rounds out the interior. Driver assist features include air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power locks, power windows, power mirrors, power seat and power antenna.
Every item on the vehicle is operational. The engine bay, trunk and interior are all reported as original and have not been cosmetically upgraded, but with some attention to detailing, the owner feels it could be a “number one” vehicle.
In 1974, a wide eggcrate grille was used. Dual round headlamps were mounted close together in square bezels. Further outboard were double deck wraparound parking lamps. Shorter vertical grille guards appeared in about the same position as before. Rear fender sides were flatter without the elliptical bulge. The thin beltline molding was positioned lower by several inches. The rear end had vertical bumper ends with the tail light built in. Both bumpers, especially the rear, protruded further from the body. Coupe DeVilles were no longer hardtops, instead sporting large wide “coach” windows giving a thick center pillar look. A new curved instrument panel housed a digital clock. New standard features included an integral litter container. A Space Saver spare tire was standard when DeVilles were ordered with optional white sidewall steel belted radial tires.
1974 also saw the introduction of the optional “Air Cushion Restraint System.” Known today as airbags, this option provided protection for front seat occupants in the case of a frontal collision. One bag was located in the steering wheel, the other in the dashboard in front of the front seat passenger. The glove box was replaced with a lockable storage compartment under the dashboard. The option was unpopular and was discontinued after the 1976 model year.
A new option package was a fully padded Cabriolet roof treatment. It incorporated a landau-style top with bright metal forward divider strip. Another new option package was the d’Elegance package. Similar to the Sixty Special Brougham’s package of the same name, it featured velour upholstery, Deluxe padded doors, front seatback storage pockets, deep pile carpeting, floor mats, see-through standup hood ornament and vinyl tape accent stripes.
Competition to this car in 1974 included Lincoln’s Continental Coupe, Chrysler’s Imperial LeBaron two-door hardtop and AMC’s Matador Brougham Coupe.
