The American family station wagon. If you grew up in up in the 60's or 70's, you likely were hauled around in a station wagon as a kid. They were practical and extremely popular-only to be replaced by the SUV in later years. In the early 1960's Buick offered several models ofstation wagon, one of the most popular being the midsize Special.
This particular wagon is a highly optioned 1962 Special Deluxe.It came in the beautiful combination of "teal mist" with black and silver interior. Most of them had a six cylinder and three speed manual, but this oneis powered by the optional aluminum 215 cubic inch V8 paired to an automatictransmission. It has a power rear window, power steering and a factory roof rack. And here's the kicker-IT HAS 23,589 ORIGINAL MILES. The original owners bought it as a "third" vehicle and it did not get driven much, It was parked in 1973 and it sat until this year when it was purchased from the estate of the original owners. It comes with a transferableCalifornia title in the original owner's name with an "ACTUAL MILEAGE" signed certification.
This beautiful little Buick still wears itsoriginal paint, chrome and interior. Since being removed from its 53 year slumber, only a cursory wash and vacuum was done. The paint is a bit dirty but will likely come out nicely with a professional detail. The body is perfectly straight down the sides and since it has spent its entire life in Southern California there has never been any rust. The exterior chrome is straight and shiny but has some freckling. The video above shows each door closing and how nice and tight they are.
The interior is amazing. The dashboard, headliner, door panels, seat surfaces and components are still like new. The seats are supple and absolutely useable as is. There is a small hole in the front seat (see photos), a tear in the driver's armrest and some of the carpet in the rear has peeled up. The rear seat is excellent. The originaltrim around the door openings is near mint. The steering wheel is mint, but the horn button shroud has some cracks.The rear luggage area shows some wear. All 4 original hubcaps are present and are in excellent shape.
The original matching numbers 215ci V8 appears untouched, however it will not turn over. The really cool original translucent red spark plug wires were present but fell apart during removal. The cylinders have had diesel and Marvel Mystery Oil soaking in them for the last month or so. All of the electrical on the car works when power is applied except the brake lights and heater fan.
To find any 64 year old car in this condition with such low mileage isextremely rare, but to find an unrestored family station wagon like this is truly a unicorn. Rarer convertibles and coupes weren't relegated to the crusher as often as cars like sedans and wagons. The wagons normally were driven alot and hardly ever preserved at all. A discerning buyer will appreciate this little piece of history and hopefully keep its originality and bring it to the next level.
