1937 Buick 46 Special Business Coupe Additional Info:

1937 Buick 46 Special Business Coupe For consignment, a 1937 Buick 46 Special Business Coupe with a characteristic extended trunk and articulated fenders in a wonderful hue of blue. Storage was primary in business coupes, so the two seat configuration was common and this one is in beautiful condition. Exterior Born in Sudan Blue and still wearing it, it exhibits a wonderful period color that must've been a stand out in 1937 and certainly is an attention getter in 2024. A tall integrated grille is underlined with a straight chrome bumper while driving lights outsize the bullet headlights and small torpedo marker lights ride high on the curves of the fenders. The cab is a rounded bubble atop outstretch lengths of the hood and the trunk and an encased side mounted spare tire assures the salesman will get to his long distance destination and not be stranded by the inconvenience of a flat tire. And yes, he knew how to change a tire. The rear is where this vehicle really shines, not just in the paint but in the sheer dimensions of the trunk, flanked by cartoonishly small tail lights and highlighted by a sculpted rear bumper and chrome exhaust deflector. 16-inch body matched wheels have Buick dog dish hubcaps and white pinstriping that converge visually with the wide white walls for a lovely finish to the wheels. All the metal work including window frame, door handles, hood ornament, and side mirror are in fantastic shape. A small ding in one of the polished wheel beauty rings is the only flaw we note. Interior You didn't make the sale after a long pitch, but you open the door where soft textured tan door panels with stunning wood trim greet you. The couch like split bench welcomes you like a warm blanket, and all is right in the world as you flop your papers next to you and travel to your next potential customer. You can't be home all the time, so the interior brings a bit of home to you. Behind the seats exists a large storage area surrounded by smooth walls and wood trimmed windows. An ivory plastic rimmed banjo style steering wheel further puts your mind at ease, the horn ring showing some patina and the Buick Eight center cap slightly faded, but the dash ahead is amazing. Glossy wood surrounding a deco printed speedometer in a taupe background and housing the cluster of gauges and needles you'll be studying on your travels. Beautiful wood fills the full width of the dash including with it an AM radio, chrome grated speaker, ivory knobs, an ambient temperature gauge and a clock in front of the passenger side embedded in the glovebox door. An ivory handled floor mounted shifter is surrounded by a brown flannel mat and the stitched headliner, marred only with a small stain, is in excellent condition flowing to vinyl handled visors in wonderful shape. Drivetrain A 248ci 8 cylinder engine is behind the engine cover and shows in clean driver quality with typical surface rust on the exhaust manifold. A 2-barrel carburetor provides the fuel, and a 3-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels and 4.40 gears. Drum brakes are equipped all around. Undercarriage Spectacularly clean underneath with barely a hint of surface rust. The single exhaust flows through a long stock style muffler before moving through the X-frame and to the back. Coil springs make up the suspension in the front while leaf springs are found out back. A touch of residual oil is seen on the transmission but does not appear to be an active leak. Drive-Ability We anticipated a smooth running engine and enjoyable ride and this Buick did not disappoint. The interior, as noted, is a very nice place to spend time and the 100 horsepower engine provides adequate power and although you won't win any drag races, you'll reliably and comfortably get to your destination, even if that's a quarter mile down the road. With the exception of the radio, all functions operate as intended and we pull big blue back into the garage. What once was a vehicle of utility is now a drop dead gorgeous show car that is a hair away from concours level quality. Business coupes were working vehicles with all the luxury of high end passenger cars of the time. They saw many miles through years of usage so finding a gem like this one might be less common than the sedans of the day. Our consignor states this car has attended several rallies without a problem. No sir, I'm not interested in the vacuum cleaner, but I love your car.
