1970 Buick Electra 225 Additional Info:

1970 Buick Electra 225

The Buick Electra is a full size luxury car manufactured and marketed by Buick from 1959 to 1990, over six generations - having been named after heiress and sculptor Electra Waggoner Biggs by her brother-in-law Harlow H. Curtice, former president of Buick and later president of General Motors. The Electra was offered in coupe, convertible, sedan and station wagon body styles over the course of its production with rear-wheel drive (1959-1984) or front-wheel drive (1985-1990, except station wagon). For its entire production run, it ran on some form of GM's C Platform which it shared with the OIdsmobile 98 and Cadillac DeVille. Only a minor facelift with revised grille and taillight trim marked the 1970 Electra 225. The big news was under the hood, where a new 370 hp 455 cubic-inch V8 replaced the 430 V8 used from 1967 to 1969. This was the final year for the Electra convertible, finned aluminum brake drums and high compression engines.

Gracing our hallowed halls here at the Classic Auto Mall, we have for your consideration, one of Buick's shining stars in the form of a 1970 Electra 225 4 door hardtop. Most definitely a step above barn find, but some TLC will bring this massive highway hauler to the next level.

Exterior
This deuce and a quarter presents with very nice Gulfstream Blue paint and a well preserved black vinyl top. The chrome and bright work is in very nice shape, noted is the trim spear that starts at the front of the fender and makes a downward swoop toward the rear of the car, almost denoting speed. Beautiful taillights bring up the rear and take up two thirds of the tail end, reverse lights sit atop the quarter panel ends like beacons in a storm. Quad headlights are in front and create a menacing look for those coming toward this beast. Buick hubcaps are present on all four corners and fender skirts add a touch of class to the rear.

Interior
Opening the driver's door, we see blue...lots of it. Door panels are a tasteful mix of blue vinyl above and blue carpet below, a faux woodgrain sits proudly above chromed controls for the power window and power seat. Slipping behind the wheel we get enveloped in a cloth and vinyl split bench seat. The cushion upholstery can only be described at 1970's nouveau chic and it shows well without any rips or tears and only minor soiling. Moving back to the rear we see another bench seat in the same upholstery pattern stretching from door to door. Staying with the 70's style, the padded dash shows squares and rectangles for the instrumentation, HVAC controls and AM/FM radio. Down below a slightly stained blue carpet presents with very nice Buick floor mats. A peek skyward and we see a blue headliner, not torn but sagging in many areas. Room for 6 with style and comfort.

Drivetrain
455 cubic inches of Buick power sits under the massive hood, topped with a Rochester 4-barrel carburetor making a respectable 370 horses. Those horses gallop their way thru a 3-speed TH400 automatic and to the rear tires via a 10-bolt 2.56 geared rear axle assembly. Noted under the hood is power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning, cruising luxury at its finest.

Undercarriage
Getting this beast up on the lift we were pleasantly greeted with only surface rust on the frame, body hangers and floorpans, no invasive rust to be see. We note 4-wheel power drum brakes at the corners with finned drums in the front. Independent front suspension is present and a 4 link with coil springs is at the rear. Single exhaust snakes its way from the engine to the rear of this car, a new muffler and tailpipe were recently added.

Drivability
Rain thwarted our test drive plans for the day, but we did have the opportunity to fire the old girl up and let her breathe a little. A twist of the key, some coaxing to get fuel to the carb and she fired up and purred like a kitten, a big hungry wildcat if you will.

A well-preserved example of 70's excess and design all wrapped up in a menacing package. Nice body, paint, and interior give this Buick all the right stuff to take you and yours out on the town, or to the local cruise-in. Just stop on in at the Classic Auto Mall, fall in love and drive this beauty off to wherever your dreams can take you.
