1958 Buick Buick special Special Additional Info:
1958 Buick Special that turns heads everywhere. (The larger, "rich man's 57 Chevy Belair") She's a driver, not a show car (but could be) runs and drives well. Drives straight and stops straight. Has the rare three speed manual transmission, (only 17 made that year) and the 364 Nailhead has a vintage Offy tri-power intake and matching cast aluminum valve covers. The original stock air cleaner and rocker covers go with the car for those that want to return her to stock. The original two-barrel intake is missing but is an easy find.
The progressive Carter carb trio starts and runs very well, even retains the stock Buick, press-the-gas-to-start feature!! A new modern battery hold-down has been installed to replace the obsolete Buick/Cadillac elongated batteries (over $500 apiece!) The stock points distributor has been upgraded to Pertronix electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump has been installed as well. Still has the original Harrison brass radiator. All the brake lines appear to have been replaced in the last five years and new rear wheel brake cylinders were just installed. The new quiet dual exhaust system is only a year old.
Pics show a shiny clean valve train and the 364 engine appears to have been freshened in the last five years or so as there is no smoke whatsoever and she idles like a kitten at over 50 psi oil pressure! Ride is typical Buick, soft and smooth. Just serviced and three new WIX oil filters included). Front suspension is tight, no loose ball joints detected. Manual steering gear leaks, however. These cars came from the factory with soft fuel line from tank to pump, this has all been replaced with new. The stock fuel tank has been sealed and epoxied, since I could not find a new fuel tank for this model of Buick.
The carpet is only about a year old and the car was resprayed in the last five years or so. The original Buick scrolling speedometer still works as does the original mechanical oil pressure gauge and factory ammeter . Fuel gauge is good but needs a new sending unit in the tank. Factory temperature gauge needs to be replaced. No clock came on the Special models (factory wiring is there, however). The dash lights were just converted to all LED bulbs. Interior is shown in the pics; the car needs a new headliner and a new one is furnished (but not installed). New vent window seals are included a well.
As a 60-year old car, she has bubbling in the paint and pitting in the chrome. I'd call the current paint job a '20-footer'. At some point in the near future, she needs a repaint, the rockers replaced and the floor pans, together with the usual rusted-out spare tire well. Trunk floor is otherwise solid. Has the five original Buick wheels and four Buick hubcaps.
This car is sold as -is, where -is with no warranty. Clear title in my name, none of that "sold with a bill-of-sale only" nonsense. Personal inspections here in Las Cruces, NM are welcome. Serious bidders only please, and bidders with less than 50 transactions will be cancelled unless they call me first. No games please. No reserve, so bid to win, early and often!
