1974 BMW 2002 Tii For consignment, a well sorted 1974 BMW 2002 Tii with among other goodies, a Ray Korman Stage II engine upgrade. The exterior and interior have also been restored during the consignor's tenure and what we have now in our Hallowed Halls is a strikingly beautiful and strong running BMW of desirable vintage and model. As my BMW obsessed friend says, "if you haven't driven one, you don't know what you're missing". Exterior Inca Orange makes a bright appearance on every body panel and uniquely, the bumpers. If the model alone doesn't get attention, the blast of orange paint surely will. Rally lights emerge from the front bumper flaking the kidney grille. The side markers are rounded around the fender corners in a noteworthy design cue. The factory sunroof does not leak per the consignor and the original 13-inch Minilite wheels look fantastic. Tall windows on this little car create a greenhouse effect and aid in visibility for this driving machine. A square back is finished with ANSA dual exhaust tips exiting in the center. A closer look reveals some body filler repair on the rear valance, chipping paint along a bottom edge, flaking rust under some bubbles also on a lower edge, and various other rock chips, touch-ups, and bubbling on or near edge surfaces. We also note filler plugs where the body side molding once resided, but fear not as our consignor is including all the trim and attaching clips. Interior Black vinyl door panels lead to matching front bucket seats and a rear bench, all in excellent condition. A sporty Grant GT steering wheel directs the car while a wood trimmed dash panel has large readable VDO gauges and indicator lights. An analog clock sits center and below it, a bespoke center stack console that holds a Sony AM/FM/CD radio, a trio of VDO gauges, (volts, oil temperature, oil pressure), and an ashtray. The 5-speed shifter is floor mounted with a rubber boot surrounded in two color loop style carpeting in great condition with matching mats on top. The headliner is in good condition and is made of ivory vinyl which helps, along with the big windows, lighten up the interior. Drivetrain Let's start with the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine which is fed by dual 2-barrel Weber 45DCOE carburetors on a Korman Autoworks modified intake manifold. And that's not the only thing from Korman as the engine upgrade kit also includes a modified cylinder head, 292 degree Shrick cam, and a Stahl jet-hot coated header. A Bespoke engine brace is attached to Bespoke shock tower stiffeners, and MSD ignition provides the spark. A 5-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear where it finds 3.64 gearing. The engine bay is clean and tidy with air elements on each of the 2-barrels. A new aluminum radiator is present along with a new water pump. Disc brakes are up front with drums in the back. Undercarriage Relatively clean and driver quality underneath with no remarkable defects. The single piped Ansa exhaust flows back and splits into twin center exit tailpipes. Independent suspension with MacPherson struts are found in the front while semi-trailing arms and coil springs make up the independent rear suspension. Drive-Ability If you're going to drive a bright orange 2002, then having a "sweet exhaust note" is indeed requisite. The car sounded great as we rolled the 205/60R13's onto the test loop and shifted through first, second, and third gear wherein the car had zippy acceleration and great handling. Fourth and fifth aren't too shabby either and we can see why some people still drive these cars daily. Nimble, quick, and with great feedback, this is really one you need to drive to truly appreciate. Photos and receipts for the restoration will accompany this car on purchase and the new owner will be confident in knowing the ingredients that went into baking this cake. Which is great, because we're sure people will want to know more! It's a great looking car, a desirable model, and a well sorted icon of the BMW world. Step up to the plate and send it!
