The BMW 7-series was the marque's first luxury car when it debuted in 1977. This 1984 model was the final year for the 733i variant. It is a very solid example that has been treated well with a very clean under body.
This model was made in November 1983 at BMW's West Germany factory. Dressed in gold, the car's paint and trim are in overall very good order, along with solid and straight bodywork. The engine bay is tidy while the cargo area is clean. The chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body.
This Bimmer rolls on Arizonian Silver radials, size 205/70R14 at every corner. The tires are older and mounted on factory alloy wheels. Car has some needs: speedo/odo inop, temp gauge inop, right rear window is also inop.
Under the forward-hinged hood is a 3.2L SOHC inline six-cylinder engine (code M30B32) with Bosch fuel injection. Backing this motor is a four-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include electronic climate control, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, power locks, power sideview mirrors, cruise control, seat heaters and a reclining rear bench seat. There is also a sunroof.
Inside, a brown leather interior accurately reflects the mileage on the odometer. The brown seats, carpet and headliner are all in satisfactory order. The four-spoke, deep-dish steering wheel faces the driver. The dashboard is in decent shape while the inner door panels are in very good order. The center console and console-mounted shifter look good and a JVC AM/FM stereo with CD player is mounted in the dash. The dashboard and door panels are swathed in maple wood trim for added warmth.
The E23 introduced many electronic features for the first time in a BMW, including an on-board computer, service interval indicator, a "check control panel" (warning lights to indicate system faults to the driver), a dictaphone and complex climate control systems. It was also the first BMW to offer an anti-lock braking system (ABS), a driver's airbag (optional, starting in April 1985) and a new design of front suspension.
In the US, 1984 saw the arrival of the optional four-speed automatic transmission (replacing the three-speed unit previously offered), wood trim replacing the plastic above the glove compartment and on the ashtray and electrically adjustable power seats.
North American versions were fitted with larger bumpers (to comply with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards), smaller sealed beam headlights, and various forms of emissions equipment that were not found on European-market cars. The engines used in these markets had lower-compression pistons and thus were less powerful than European-market versions.
Competition to this BMW in 1984 included Aston Martin's Lagonda, Jaguar's XJ6 and Mercedes-Benz's 380SL.
