1985 BMW 5-Series Vinyl Seats Additional Info:

After many years owning this 524TD, it is time for me to downsize and own only one car.

This 1985 524TD is a very well preserved example, with most of the mechanical, electrical, body, and interior components in excellent shape.

The car has 265,000 miles, has been well maintained since new, and I have extensive records including the original purchase documents, window sticker, and 39 years of service records. I have owned it since 2015, and purchased it from a trustee of the original owner.

The exterior color is Cosmo Blue, with dark blue vinyl seats, carpets, and accents. The body is near perfect, with the small ding on the right rear corner the only real defect. The hood, roof, and trunk lid were all professionally painted in 2022. There is some light paint fading on the top of the fenders, but paint on the vertical panels is still in very good condition, and I felt it unnecessary to repaint where the original German lacquer paint is in good condition. The glass is all excellent, with the exception of the windshield which has a couple of pock marksthathave not changed in the 9 years I have owned this car. There are no tears in the upholstery of any kind. Both the bottom and back of both front seats were professionally repadded in 2021. However, the driver's side power seat forward and backward feature does not operate, which I have been told is likely due to the metal seat frame bending. It can easily be repaired by either welding the frame back into place or replacing it with any 1982-1988 E series seat frame.

The tachometer is not working, but all the other gauges and the clock work as they should. I will include an original replacement tachometer module.

The sunroof opens and closes smoothly and seals tightly against the elements. The power windows all operate smoothly, and the rubber weatherstripping on all of the doors, trunk, and hood is in excellent condition. All of the door panels are in excellent condition with no tears. The dash has no cracks, and a dashmat has been in place for many years. There is currently a basic Alpine FM/AM/CD player installed, and I am including the original BMW FM/AM Cassette player.

The tires were replaced in 2022 with 4 new Cooper Evolution series 195/70R14s.

Mechanically, the diesel engine has been carefully gone through over the last few years. The fuel injector pump, water pump, belt tensioner, drive belts, hoses, starter, and injectors have been replaced. The valves were adjusted to factory specs. I have changed the oil and filter much more often than standard recommendations, and the oil runs clean for an extended period, unlike most diesels. The automatic transmission was flushed less than 5,000 miles ago, and shifts smoothly without hesitation. The car accelerates powerfully with almost immediate turbo boost, and will climb any steep hill with ease.Unfortunately, the AC compressor is failing, so it will have to be rebuilt.

The brakes have been well maintained, and the system flushed. The drive shaft support bushing, rear pittman arms, front sway bar links, and lower control arms have all been replaced. The driveshaft was rebuilt and balanced with new universal joint assemblies, and the car was aligned.

The car runs very smoothly up to about 50mph, but has a mild vibration at speed, which I have not diagnosed or attempted to eliminate.

There were only about 1500 of this model ever imported into the US in 1985 and 1986, and when I have searched for it for sale, I currently can find none for sale in the US, and one in the Netherlands for $26,950.The 524TD was the fastest diesel passenger car in the world when it was introduced, and it was a great success in Europe.

I am including a box of E28 parts with this sale, as seen in one of the pictures. If the buyer lives out of the San Francisco Bay Area, I am happy to assist in any reasonable way to facilitate transporting

the car.The car is located in the North Berkeley Hills directly across the Bay from San Francisco.
