1984 BMW 5-Series Additional Info:

BMW's second iteration of the 5 Series, the E28, proved to be a marked improvement over their initial attempt. Though stylistically similar, the new 5 Series improved on its predecessor in every measurable standard. Interior space was increased for additional passenger comfort, the suspension was upgraded to a dual-link Macpherson strut and semi-trailing arm design to minimize messy cornering feel, and power output was raised across the model lineup. Safety features, such as ABS and laminated safety glass, became available as well as previously unseen in-car technology, including an on-board computer and check-control panel. The result was a vehicle that the BMW 5 Series on the map as a high-quality, sporty executive car that quickly became common across the world.
This fantastic two-owner 1984 BMW 520i may appear stock from a distance, but under the hood lies a BMW S52 engine sourced from a 1998 BMW M3. It began its life in the United Kingdom, purchased from Park Lane BMW in London. The car spent five years in the UK before being exported to the United States in 1989 by its original owner. After moving to Massachusetts, the 2.0L I6 engine was replaced with a more powerful 2.5L Vanos engine from a 1994 525i. Not content to keep the rest of the car stock, the original owner had Schneller BMW perform the following upgrades:
  • M5 motor mounts
  • E36 M3 radiator
  • E28 535i sport exhaust
  • M5 brake booster
  • An e36 5-speed transmission
  • An upgraded suspension

Over the next 21 years, the car was frequently driven and maintained by Schneller. It was then brought back to the shop for a driveline swap. The 2.5L M50 engine was removed in favor of an S52, which powered the American-market BMW M3. The 520i had 113,000 miles at the time of the swap. Service between 2000 and 2001 included:
  • A new gas tank
  • Nearly all suspension and brake related items were replaced
  • The M50 was replaced with an S52 out of a 1998 BMW M3 with 12,000 miles.
  • 1998 BMW M3 5-speed transmission, new throwout bearing, new driveshaft, new M3 clutch, and flywheel assembly
  • Koni Sport adjustable shocks, H&R springs
  • Euro M3 mass air flow meter
  • New fuel injectors
  • Low-mileage BMW M6 steering box
  • New Behr radiator

This 520i has been well-maintained with a no-expense-spared attitude its entire life, and both owners have kept meticulous records. All documents pertaining to this car, including import documents and all service records, are included with the vehicle, with the only missing receipt from a full repaint in 2006. For the BMW enthusiast, few E28s offer the same refinement, classic styling, and modern performance.
