1973 BMW 2002 5 spd Sunroof Original Paint California Car 85K miles
Up for auction is a very special BMW 2002. It’s my beloved rust free 1973 BMW 2002 with manual transmission (5 speed GETRAG) equipped with a rare factory sunroof. This 2002 has the desirable round tail lights (commonly referred to as a “Roundie”) and small chrome bumpers. It has 85K original miles and drives incredibly well. Oddly enough it still has its original 13 inch wheels and chrome hubcaps. The car comes with its original mint perfect never used owner’s manual and still wears its original Sahara Beige paint. Interior is Saddle which looks, feels and smells great. This is a rust free California car. Drive it all day long and enjoy as is.
Overall Condition: The car is currently registered in New York State, passed its annual New York State safety inspection and garaged in Huntington, New York. The car starts right up and runs strong all day long. It is very smooth with great acceleration and good brakes. 2nd gear is a bit week so I assume it eventually needs a syncro. I literally drive this car every weekend and every chance I get. Starts right up and is very reliable. Paint is original but has its imperfections such as nicks, dings, scratches and small areas that beginning to show signs of minor surface rust. There are no issues from rust anywhere that I found. Frame is straight and rust free along with all the other areas discussed below.
Mechanicals: You basically turn the key and the engine fires right up. It runs very strong and does not smoke or have any oil leaks. Engine idles around 800 rpms. Engine acceleration is smooth and sounds great. Full recent tune up was completed by “The Little Garage “in Huntington NY who specializes in BMW 2002’s including, new water pump and belt, spark plugs, distributer cap, rotor, condenser, shift bushings and valve adjustment. Engine runs smooth as can be. 5 speed is from a 320i and is a very desirable GETRAG 5 speed gearbox. A popular and valuable upgrade.
Shocks, steering, suspension and brakes are all in very good working order needing nothing. Clutch feels perfect.
Mechanically, it runs great and can run all day and on long trips. It’s reliable and basically a daily driver.
The following are NEW parts:
· Vintage Wooden steering wheel (I retained the original wheel)
· New Water Pump with new belt
N 4 NEW Kumho Tires
· New Radiator hoses and clamps and thermostat
· Completely Rebuilt Stick Shift with all new bushings
· New plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points, condenser
Body: This car was never ever repainted! It still wears its original Sahara Beige paint. The driver’s door is a shade off maybe that was repainted years ago. The body is straight, solid with some minor imperfections. The door jams, fenders, shock towers, trunk, floors etc. etc. Is rust free. Doors close nicely and windows roll up to the top! Glass, chrome and rubber are all original and in nice condition.
Interior: The interior has its original beautiful and rare leather Saddle seats with headrests and saddle door panels. The seats have no tears or rips or stains. The dash is 100% original with working gauges, button and knobs. Carpet set and headliner are in good condition.
The car just drives and feels right. It’s a happy 2002 that was well cared for in its sunny California history. I hate to part with it but my son is moving on with his life and no longer wants it so its time to sell. I have clear New York Title in hand.
The car is sold “AS IS” with no expressed or implied warrantee or guarantees. I am not a broker or a dealer so this is a private sale that is final. It is sold “WHERE IS” in Huntington, New York and if transported will be the cost of the buyer.
I have set a reasonable reserve on the car. My Classic Car Insurer has valued the 2002 at $25,000. Good 2002’s are getting harder to find in unrestored original condition like this car and are getting very sought after by collectors and car enthusiasts.
If you are a serious buyer and have any questions please call me at 631-339-3349 with any questions or if you need any more detailed photos. I will request a $250 deposit within 48 hours and the balance shortly thereafter and will hold the car for you until payment and transportation has been made. Thanks for your interest. Dave.
