1970 BMW 2800CS Automatic Sport Coupe NO TITLE
IT IS AN E9 not a 3 Series
NO TITLE- Car was from New York State that did not require titles at the time.
This car is probably best for parts. We drove it on weekends in the 1990’s until the radio shorted out the ignition cable. Although I had replaced the harness I did not finish the total reinstall.
When I bought the car, the 2800 engine had a lower end problem. Also the ZF transmission did not have reverse. I replaced the 2.8 with a 3.0-liter engine and a Borg Warner type auto transmission. The replacement transmission has a different connector for the shift position display so that f unction doesn’t light up. In order to start the car it needs to be grounded to the aforementioned connector. I got by using an alligator clip. If the auction goes over $3500 the original 2.8 liter engine and ZF will go with the car,
About this car:
Note the low serial number –2280429 (ID plate in engine well and ID label on the drivers door match)
From my research in 1993, this car was 1 of 534 imported into New York. The car is unique in that it has roll up windows in the front and power windows in the back. Also this car has original cloth upholstery (they would now need to be restored). Has manual sunroof. As I understand, this is a European car that was modified for US emissions.
The previous owner did a poor restoration of the floorboards, and rockers. There is Bondo in different places and rust in the wheel wells. Surface rust found elsewhere. Rear shock towers ok. See photos.
It is pretty much complete but may be missing some chrome on the front end and other small stuff. There is a front bumper but I also had a couple of Bavaria’s so I don’t know which one goes with this car. Pick one.
No Battery. No radio. I was able to turn the motor with a jump starter, but it would not start with fuel put into the carbs.
The carburetors are Weber downdrafts 32/36DGAV-ICU (Comes with the Air Cleaners)
The Michelin tires are still like new and mounted on the original BMW aluminum rims. Includes a spare tire with same rims on the car.
Left front was damaged from the previous owner. There is a slight crunch on the uni-body frame but has no affect on the drivability of the car. The car ran and drove nice for the 5 years we used it.
Please look at the photos. If you have any questions please use the eBay correspondence method.
