This 1977 Austin LTI FX4 London taxi cab is an excellent way to get into a fairly rare right hand drive restoration project that runs and drives! Plus, it was legally imported and has a title! The British made FX4, or Black Cab as they are commonly called, is a longtime symbol of the UK with a production run spanning from 1957 to 1997. They were over engineered for the rigors of taxi life and many last over 1 million miles with regular upkeep. The car body sits on a separate heavy-duty chassis. Also, engineers at Austin created a unique steering system that allows the car to turn around in the tight streets of London, and it is incredible how tightly this one can whip around!
This particular 1977 Austin LTI FX4 London taxi cab runs, drives, and stops. All body panels are present on the car. The interior features the original meter, a pair of rear facing jump seats, a driver seat, and the rear seat. All the seats are nice shape except the rear seat has a split as shown. The floor mats are all present. The headliner dropped in the back where the rear seal went bad. The door panels and dash are in nice shape. There is no front passenger seat from the factory! Due to the small trunk capacity, the front passenger seat was eliminated in favor of providing additional cargo storage. None of the glass is broken. The rear window seal went bad so the window is tabbed in place and taped up to keep water out. The manual windows all slide as they should but the power window on the cargo door and sunroof are not currently operating.
It has the usual rust found on any British car. The floors are good however the rockers will need patching. The trunk is pretty solid except for along the rear edge. The body panels will all need some attention. There is filler on it. Due to the long life cycle of the Austin LTI FX4, almost all panels can easily be purchased from the UK at affordable prices. Same with trim, chrome bumper replacements, etc. The Nissan LD27 diesel engine fires right up. It does not smoke. These are known for their fantastic fuel economy. The automatic transmission shift through all the gears. The brakes work and use pure silicone brake fluid, so do not put regular DOT stuff in it. The brake lights have a tendency to stay on. The other lights are not working so plan on going over the electrical.
The big thing is that this 1977 Austin LTI FX4 London taxi cab was legally imported and has a title. It last had a New York state inspection in 2009. Many of the cabs that come up for sale do not have proper paperwork to put them on the road. New tariffs have made it more expensive to import a taxi than buy and restore this one. Fewer of them are coming up for sale and the ones that do need far more work.
