1958 Austin Healey BN4 100-6 Frame up Resto with Factory Hardtop

I am the proud 2nd owner of this stunning 1958 100-6 Austin Healey (BN-4 seater model). I bought the AHfrom the estate whose patriarch bought it new on May 7, 1958 for $3,388 in cash and aused MGTF trade in. I have the original Bill of Sale, Original Owner Title, Austin Warranty Certificate, Owners Handbook with Owners Card, Workshop Manual, and an extra set of keysand a file filled with parts receipts.....now that's authenticated provenance! The car lived with the originalowner in the state of Delaware from 1958 to 2015 where it received a full body on restoration from the frame up. I acquired it in 2015 and have been enjoying it ever since. I also have the original Delaware License plate issued in 1958.

This is a historically significant car because it is an early production 100-6, built in March 1958, and is a matching numbers car with the original “6 PORT” head, 2.7 liter 6 cylinder engine and 4 speed gearbox with overdrive, putting out 117 HP. The H in the engine no. indicated a high compression head. This car is optioned with overdrive, wire wheels, Blue Tourneau cover, door locks, adjustable steering wheel and an extremely rare and desirable Factory Works hardtop! The hardtop alone is worth $5,000 as is if sold separately. The car also comes with its original jack, complete tool kit, original convertible top, NEW Tourneau cover, side curtains and dealer documentationfrom new as mentioned above.

This car has 79,161miles on the odometer from new, with only about 1,000 miles since restoration. The VIN No.is BN4L-0-59605), body No.4530 8320, Serial No. 1968, Engine No.26DB-H-59605. All numbers match on this car and it has all the original body panels.

The car was never been in an accident nor does it have any bondo on it. The car was taken down to bare metal and repainted Ice Blue over dark Navy Blue. Original color was Old English White. Seats, dash and door panels are ORIGINAL and have NEVER been replaced. Yes they are the original leather seats in excellent condition! The body sits really nice, not like the later 3000’s that are way too high off the ground. It starts right up and idles as quiet and rock steady as an old Singer sewing machine. The car drives well with an incredibly exciting exhaust note, a truly exhilarating ride.

Mechanicals: This car still retains its original matching nos. 6 cylinderengine (2639cc) and 4 speed gearbox. It is believed that the lower engine was never apart, except that I dropped the oil pan and cleaned it out and changed the oil and gasket. The head was completely rebuilt including new intake and exhaust valves, new seats, valve guides and push rods. The original HD6 carbs were rebuilt along with a new high torque starter, water pump, coil, plugs, wires, rotor cap, condenser, points, fuel pump and new fuel lines. New wiring harness was installed and the brakes system was completely rebuilt including new brake cylinders, brake shoes, brake lines and master cylinder. I installed a new Bell stainless steel exhaust system (UK made) including new down pipes,, mufflersand mounting hardware.

The Healey is currently registered in New York State, Insured and has been safety inspected on a yearly basis. It sits garaged / covered in Huntington, New York (Long Island). Turn the key, hear the fuel pump tick, pull the choke out and the high torque spins the engine to life. Engine idles at 800 and is silky smooth. It always starts the first attempt. Oil pressure is strong at 60-70 psi and it revs quickly to 5000 rpms. It runs very strong with no oil leaks or smoke. Once the engine warms up after several minutes or so, you push in the choke and off you go. Engine acceleration is smooth and that new stainless steel exhaust system sounds terrific!!!!! The engine runs cool and doesn’t overheat. All lights, signals, brake lights work fine.

Shocks and suspension are good and have been greased. Steering feelsheavy at slow speeds but lightens up at speed. Front wheel alignment was just done. Gearbox is quiet and pulls well in all 4 gears without any grinds, noises or hesitation. Overdrive works sometimes…The solenoid probably needs to be replaced. Downshifting is fine and the clutch is light and a pleasure to shift up and down through all the gears. The side shifting gear lever is very comfortable to drive with. I mounted the drivers seat as far back as possible to gain leg room for my 6 foot 3 inch tall frame and installed new seat belts. You can literally drive it 60-80 mph all day long. It has a comfortable road feeland what an incredible inspiring sounding exhaust note….Vrrroooommmm!

The following are new parts/services:

  • New Derrington English Cherry Wood steering wheel (adjustable), I have retained the original Banjo wheel in great original condition.

  • New factory quality UK made original type Blue pile carpet set

  • New front and rear wheel cylinders, flex brake hoses, bleeder screws, Master Cylinders (Clutch and Brake), brake pads and all new brake lines.

  • New tune up parts (wires, cap, rotor, condenser, plugs, oil filter, air cleaners)

  • New BELL (UK Made)Complete Stainless Steel Exhaust system including down pipes and Muffler

  • New high torque starter, fuel pump, fuel lines, coil, water pump, fan belt.

  • New Wiring harness from the UK

  • New Verdestin tires (165x15x70) and speed balanced

The brake system is all new and the car stops quickly in a straight line with no fade or pulling to either side. Engine runs cool with no overheating at all. Charging system works as it should. All gauges and lights, signals, brake lights work well, most of the times.

Body: Body is no rust, straight as an arrow and accident free! Paint is in excellent condition. It’s overall restoration is show quality, not Amelia Island concourse, but a proud contender.

Fenders and doors are original. Inner and outer sills, rocker panels have all been replaced and the shop did an excellent job. The frame is straight and rust free along with rust free floors. Front windshield glass and all chrome including front and rear bumpers, front grill and chrome trim rings are original and in good condition.

Interior: The dash is 100% original with working original gauges, buttons and knobs. Blue pile carpet from England is original type and of a high quality. Seats are 100% original leather along with the dash pad and door panels. The kick panels are new. The original banjo steering wheel goes with the car. Aluminum cockpit rails are in good condition with a nice tight fit. Doors close nice and lock. Convertible top looks to be original condition. I have never used it since I have the hardtop. Side curtains are new.

The Factory Works hardtop is original and is very valuable. It is a great option to have…. These are extremely rare (numbered by the factory) and sought after and go for around $5K - $10K if someone is stupid enough to sell one. They add at least 10%-20% premium to the cars value.

Closing: This is a60 year old car so it is sold “AS IS” with no expressed or implied warrantee or guarantees. I am not a broker or a dealer so this is a private sale that is final. It is sold “WHERE IS” in Huntington, New York and if transported will be the cost of the buyer. I have set a reasonable reserve on the car. Hagerty Insurance Co has an agreed upon value of $75,000. You are welcome to see and drive the car to insure satisfaction.

Original Austin Healy’s are almost impossible to find these days especially in unrestored, unmolested condition. The early “Big Healey’s” are very sought after by collectors and car enthusiasts and are rapidly appreciating in the lower six-figures for well restored cars or excellent original low mileage cars (yeah if you can find them). This car in # 1 condition would be $103,000+ (see Hagerty Valuation tool).

I personally think the 100-6’s are the best looking cars out of all the six cylinder “Big Healeys” cars. The body sits lower and has nicer lines than the 3000’s and they don’t have that ugly convertible top sticking out the back. Who needs roll up windows and a wooden dash anyway!!!

I have a current valid transferrable New York state registration. The state of New York does not issues titles on cars built prior to 1972.

If you are a serious buyer and have any questions or need any detailed photos please call or text me at 631-339-3349 or contact me through E-Bay email by asking me a question. I will sell to Europe/ worldwide and to anyone who appreciates this early Austin Healey BN4 100-6. I have the right to end this auction early since I will advertise on other venues. I will request a $500 deposit within 24 hours and the balance shortly thereafter. I will hold the car for you until payment and transportation has been made. The payment of two private college tuitions forces sale…enough said. Thanks for your interest. Dave.
