Why is the Austin Healey 100-4 BN2 collectable?
While the Austin-Healey 100-4 BN2 was a near direct replacement to the BN1 models, there were several changes to the 1955 production of the second series. These cars had a true 4-speed transmission with overdrive, as compared to the BN1’s 3-speed transmission, and offered smaller front brakes and stiffer springs to improve the cars balance. Other features that distinguish the BN2 from the BN1 are the slightly larger front wheel arches, and different rear axle. In 1955, a high-performance 100M model was introduced, with larger carburetors, a cold air box to increase engine air flow, high-lift camshaft and 8.1:1 compression pistons. It produced 110bhp (82kW) at 4500rpm. The front suspension was stiffened and the bonnet gained louvres, along with a bonnet belt. The 100M components (including the high compression pistons) were also available as the Le Mans Engine Modification Kit, which could be installed in either a BN1 or BN2 with the engine in situ, improving the power output to approximately 110bhp (75kW) at 4500rpm. The kit could be ordered fromBMC, allowing private owners to make their own modifications.By January 1956 production was running at 200 cars each month and sales in California 150 cars each month. The final BN2 was built in July 1956, with a total of only 4604 BN2s produced, including the 100M.
One thing is certain; these Austin-Healey Roadster models are highly sought after among British and classic sport car enthusiasts. In fact, Jay Leno is known to have a 1956 Austin-Healey 100 BN2 in his private collection as well.
