1966 AMC Classic Additional Info:

Before we start with a listing let me run down what has beendone. I built this car as a daily driver so I admittedly went a bit overboard withthe repairs and upgrades. I ended up stumbling into a 74 Duster and a 65Mercury just as I was finishing up the Rambler so now my focus has shifted tothose.

Rust repair- floors and cowl have been rebuilt and all rustwas removed. A coating of POR-15 was applied to the entire floor area forfuture rust prevention.

New carpet kit installed front to back

New custom seat upholstery built by United Auto Upholsteryin Boise

258 AMC engine installed in place of the worn out 232

Engine received:

904 transmission swapped in with new engine.

New custom built driveshaft from Jims Driveline in Boise

Upgraded original Ambassador electric wiper motor and wiring. This replaced the factory vacuum wipers that were useless, this was a common upgrade in the 80’s for these cars because the vacuum wipers worked so poorly. I was luck enough to find another 66 in the junkyard with these parts so I naturally snagged them!

New front lower ball joints from Rare Parts.

New KYB shocks on all 4 corners

New dual pot master cylinder

New Front brake shoes, wheel cylinders and soft lines

New Rear wheel cylinders and soft line

New Champion aluminum radiator installed in the factory location. The original radiator needed re-coring and would have been 3 times the cost of this arguably better radiator.

Custom rear Crossmember built for new 4-link suspension

Jeep Cherokee Rear axle swapped in to take the place of the original torque tube suspension. This was built to utilize the factory spring buckets and drag link so it fits just like a factory piece would have. These cars never had a conventional axle setup from the factory but this makes it much easier to swap in different engine/transmission combinations in the future. It also does away with the problematic original axle and transmission combo, these are nearly impossible to find parts for and limit the options of engine selection. The 4 link was constructed from DOM tubing and Heim joints sourced from Speedway motors.

The axle was used because it was the proper size and 3.55gears worked well with the 904 trans. The axle had new seals and gasket installedafter the modifications for the 4 link.

I just had the local Big-O tire shop give the car a 4 wheel alignment and inspection.

The Rambler is wearing original paint with the exception of the roof which has had a respray. The paint to the roof looks to be quite old and very well done, the color match is great and the only way I found it was a very faint masking line that I could barely feel. I went over the car quickly with a light buffing and it really looks sharp!

You can see from the pictures that the car is not perfect, it is a survivor. The dash pad is in definite need of some attention, as you can see. The headliner does have some staining to it, there are no rips or tears and the material is solid but there are stains in it.

The engine runs well but does have a bit of blow-by, I did not rebuild this engine I just gave it a fresh set of gaskets and some sprucing up. I never had the car overheat but on hot days (100+) it would run around 210F if I was pushing it on the freeway. Granted that is without a fan shroud, which I would recommend installing and was the next thing on the list for me.

The tires currently are the ones that came with the car, they are newer but had been sitting for 4-5 years in one spot. Because of that It does have a slight vibration at 50+, I made sure to double check wheel bearings and suspension components to rule them out and they all passed. The only suspension noise is coming from the rear Pan hard bar, the joints at each end are new from speedway but are made of polyurethane. Because of this, the joints squeak as the axle moves up and down. It is a bit annoying but it was never high on the priority list for me.

I want to make sure that I am letting everyone know as much about the car as possible, shopping on Ebay can be a bit intimidating at times. So let me be clear, This Rambler is not a show ready perfect ground up restoration, it has its flaws and like all old cars it could still use some attention. It is a safe and reliable old car that is a lot of fun to drive and work on. It gets lots of looks and everyone seems to love the aqua green interior!
