1968 AMC AMX Additional Info:
For consignment, a snappy AMC AMX which was a nut and bolt restoration from 2003-06. It is a Go Pack car, (Twin Grip rear, dual exhaust, disc brakes and some extra stripes). The engine was completely rebuilt by RPM to the tune of 11K. It now has a Turbo 400 transmission and a 2800 stall converter. A great design which in its day was the muscle car to have, and still is! Come and get it...ding... ding.... ding...
Exterior
Sitting on shiny Magnum 500 wheels, wrapped in racy raised white lettered BFG Radial T/A's this very cool car with its long front hood and beautiful long sloping back has its luster on the Turbo Silver Metallic respray. A dual black racing stripe runs from bow to stern making it even more sporty. Gaps are spot on and badging is kept to a minimum with a simple circular AMX on the wide B pillar. Chrome is minimal as well with just the bumpers which are inset into the body on the front and rear, and round signal lights inset into the front. A ribbed stainless rocker trim along with the wheels is also noted and plays a role in grounding the silver. Looking at this design it was really ahead of its time with the inset door handles, and the flush mounted bumpers. Dual chrome tipped exhaust pipes peek out from underneath the rear bumper..smoke 'em if ya got 'em, and this car does!
Interior
Grabbing onto the inset door handle and giving it a swing we see a clean and smooth red vinyl panel covering the door, A large "arrow" of wood appliqué is framed by thin chrome and houses the window crank. A big armrest and door actuator for the inside is also hung on the middle of the interior doors. Moving inside dual high back buckets with ribbed dimpled inserts and smooth bolsters and headrests all in blazing pristine red vinyl and all looking fab. A red molded vinyl center console races from front to back and houses the Seattle space needle like shifter as well as camouflages the center hump. In the center of the dash rising out of the center console is a lighter and "ash" receiver, AM radio and another large wood appliqué panel with 2 round vents and a hidden speaker which curves itself on to the dash top. In front of the tri-pointed star center, wood rimmed steering wheel is fronting the original dash with a trio of inserts circular gauges with white centers and black ringed outers. Temp and fan controls are deeply inset to drivers left as are the headlight and wiper knobs. Very nice red carpet covers the floors and with no rear seat, there is plenty of storage and red carpet covering the "hatchback" rear interior. The carpeting under the rear glass has faded a bit. A seam free, smooth red headliner hovers above all this 1968 design interior.
Drivetrain
With being the beneficiary of a complete engine rebuild, the original 343ci V8 which still pumps out 280hp is topped with a 4 barrel carburetor. On the back is a 3-speed TH400 automatic transmission with a 2800rpm stall converter. This throws power rearward to an AMC Twin Grip 3.15 rear axle. There is a rebuilt correct fuel pump with a vacuum pump, and on top the correct air intake is covered in block. The valve coverings are blue as is the block, and this gives a great effect with the surrounding and attached parts and hoses in black. Ceramic coated Hooker Headers, and stainless steel exhaust snakes its way back to the dual tail pipes. The engine bay is shiny and pristine.
Undercarriage
Underneath is rust free with white unibody rockers, floor pans and toe kicks. A black painted rust free driveshaft and rear pumpkin are seen as well as black painted drum brakes and suspension all around. The unibody is looking good with silver painted steel for the structure just behind the floor pans and black painted and undercoated steel up front. The bottom end of the engine is drip free with a nice transmission bell housing. The Go Pack shows up here with power front wheel disc braking, rear power drums, dual exhaust, and a posi rear.
Drive-Ability
1968 fired right up and on the test track was a pleasure to drive. This car offers up lots of interior room, while maintaining its sportiness and somewhat compact size. Smooth acceleration, good handling, solid stopping and quiet shifting for the automatic were experienced. The AC is non-functional as there is no condenser.
A great example of the AMC muscle car version direct from the time machine of 1968... Peabody. Beautiful pony car lines with the long front and over exaggerated sloping rear, this 2 door is cool. It is also nicely preserved, and runs like a Swiss watch, and for this writer, it's love American (Motors) Style!
